Another Clubhouse Question

is their choice and they pay the price if they get caught.

Problem I have here is (and please don't take this as a personal attack), yes it's their choice to drink and drive but if they get caught they get their licence taken off them, for what a year? If they don't get caught but instead hit a pedestrian, who had the choice taken out of their hands, the pedestrian has every chance of dying or being seriously injured because of some idiot (I am of course referring to those that drive drunk and not those that have a single drink before driving) who made a choice for them.

Our car park is always full and there are always a fair few having a drink. I see lots of people drinking tea or soft drinks, lots of people having maybe one beer and calling it quits, lots of people getting lifts, lots of people walking home, sometimes people dumping their cars.

Can't say for sure but I'd hope it's rare for anyone to drive off over the limit. I don't remember ever seeing anyone get into a car to drive when I've thought they shouldn't. I guess some people probably do but it's really not socially acceptable any more is it?

I'll relate a little incident that a few of us witnessed at a course the NW Mafia played at a few weeks ago.

As we came off the 18th, we witnessed a small group of late 20's men "larking" about on the patio. Obviously a bit tuned but not really causing too much of a commotion. As we sat and had a few drinks, this group became very inebriated, and were mildly insulting (especially to the Scottish member of our group).

An hour later and they were all completely legless, not drunk, but completely and utterly nished as pewts. To our surprise, the small group then ambled over to a very nice car parked nearby, climbed in, and one of them drove off. Now this course was very rural. I doubt they lived within 5 miles. The Steward who witnessed all this was very apologetic and said he would have a "word" the next day. I don't know what he said, but if it was my club, I'd have wanted them kicked out.

What would others have wanted to be done about it?

If they are members and clearly putting a large amount behind the bar regularly I would doubt the club would do too much about it. Many of our members are pretty good and will have a single pint or a soft drink but like plenty of others on here we have a number of regular members who will abuse this and drink and drive. Is it really down to the steward to manage each member?

If anyone of them abused or insulted a friend I was with, I'd have a quite word with them :smirk:

1 Pint of Guinness then home same every time ,every one of our lads is the same as its more expensive to drink in the club than our local pub. Car gets dropped of then i get dropped of at the pub and have a few beers there with there with the rest of the lads.

There's no police station where our club is but someone got caught not long ago, mind he'd had a skin full then jumped in his car totally bang out of order that and deserved all he got, he claimed he was grassed up by the club and is now serving a suspension for being a naughty boy.

I suppose part of the reason that I raised this as well is that golf clubs do differ in that they tend not to be in residential areas where much of the membership can walk to the club and my old club was on the A1 with no access except by car. You add to that the equipment that needs to be transported (there are not that many lockers to keep clubs in) and the difference with a golf club over say a tennis or squash club is that people almost have to drive to get there.

In the past 30+ years Ive been a member of about 6 squash clubs in various locations in England and Wales.
Ive always had to drive and I honestly can't recall anyone who regularly walked to and from the clubs.
In fact, my current golf club is nearer than any of my past squash clubs but having no locker I can't really push a trolley and bag about a mile and a half each way.
Well, I could but I'd look a bit of a twonk.

Suspended by the golf club?
For the offence or for the accusation?

It's a little defensive to jump on the "its not just us, everyone's doing it" bandwagon. Stikes me as someone knowing there is a problem but not really knowing what to do about it, or ignoring it, so just sidestepping the question.

Agreed and well written.

Having a pint after a round of golf is a nice way to finish the round. But having enough to put you over the limit is something I can't condone.

Something I have found has worked well is to play snake to determine who gets the round in - for anyone unfamiliar, the person holding the snake is the person who last three putted. It means that a 3 or 4 ball isn't stuck deciding who buys the beers.

As a side note - heaven forbid that anyone, golfer or not, is involved in an accident when the driver is under the influence.

I have seen statistics that say having 1 pint actually makes you less likely to have accidents.

But then, lies, damned....etc.

I think that study was published in the Journal of Made Up Statistics.

The general view is that alcohol impairs performance in a dose dependent manner, and impairment occurs at levels below the UK drink driving limit.
