Anonymity - Why allow it?

No we're not!:ears:

C'mon Hugh, we've also swapped pleasant PM's behind the scenes for a good while that others on here won't have seen. Still think your politics is too much of the Tim Farron ilk:whistle:

Indeed we have Brain - see what others don't see...:)

And nowt wrong with a bit of the old Christian Democracy ;)

So it has be revealed that Obhama tried to get Facebook to address 'fake' posts during the US election.

Facebooks' business model, like most internet 'social' media use anonymity as a core feature. We see it on this Forum where, I suspect, a few posters write stuff for which they would not wish to be accountable and have attributed/traceable to their name.

Numerous examples exist of kids/people in the public eye (often unwillingly, are subject to abuse which result in very bad consequences.

My Father always said "..never say, behind a person's back, what you would not say direct to their face..." which I've tried to adopt.

'Freedom of speech', is the cry; but it not the same. In my book you can say what you like but you should also be prepared to be held accountable for what you've said.

So, IMHO, no Internet posts/publications should be anonymous. What say you?

Its easy to be completely anonymous on the internet if you really want to be and there it little anyone can do about it. Its also pretty easy to give up a lot of info about yourself without realising it too. its the latter you should be more concernced about.

I think you are possibly confusing 2 things here, the spread of fake news and anonymity. You do not need to be anonymous to spread fake news, as many of our newspapers prove on a daily basis. ;)

No anonymity here. I can confirm that I am actually Sweep from the worlds number 1 puppet show "Sooty & Sweep" (in my view it should be called "Sweep & Sooty" as I am clearly the star of the show).
As you may have gathered I could be described as a political person and whilst I do have a bit of a go sometimes, this is only because some of you are quite daft.
I would like to think that whatever I post on here I would say to someone's face, but in reality I think I would express the same opinions but in a more diplomatic tone. In one respect anonymity is good in that if some of the things that are said on here were said to someone's face, those two people would never speak again. But that's because anonymity assists people in becoming "keyboard warriors" which is a blight on all interactive modern day media.
I am quite sure many on here don't have the highest opinion of me but like all of us I guess, I can assure you I am quite a nice chap (well dog or errr puppet) and for the record I don't hold anything against anyone on here. I would be delighted to play golf with anyone of you, even you lot who keep banging on about Remain. I actually enjoy the debates on this forum and never take offence. Otherwise, why bother? It's not like we are going to change anyone's opinion.

And another +1 from me too!

The anonymity on forums does have the advantage that identification of an individual can be controlled - at least to a certain extent. It's apparently quite common for prospective employers to do 'social media' checks on potential recruits! - something I consider decidedly 'Big Brother'-ish!

I was recruiting a teacher once and after only 3 or 4 clicks I saw their drunken escapades on holiday in Magaluf or somewhere like that, in all its gory details. It's not that difficult to make your photos only visible to friends on FaceBook.

Also can I be controversial and say there are one or two people on here who I'd not wish to play a round of golf with, not really down to leave/remain but more extreme views on certain things, general obnoxiousness, petty personal attacks and lack of any sense of humour. And I am sure some think much the same of me, which is fair comment ;)

No one gets on with everyone - hard and fast rule of life. No point pretending otherwise.
