With the European tour coming out in favour of banning anchored putters and thus aligning with the USPGA and R&A what are your views on anchored putters?

I'm against them, I think the club should be swung freely in order to hit the ball. I have no objections to using long handled putters in the way Matt Kucher does, in that the handle is held against his forearm, but when it is anchored like how Bradley and Els anchor their putters I think this is wrong and should be banned.

So simple question: Are you in favour of banning the anchoring of putters?

Yes ban them.

Peter Alliss made a great comment on the beeb today, something along the lines of "might be a bit old fashioned but if the Governing Bodies agree on a ban then we should go along with it".

i voted yes, i have tried to use one and couldnt see how it could benefit ME, however, i think the anchoring goes against what i perceive as a "putt"

Don't have any issue with long putters whatsoever. If you think they give someone an advantage then go out and buy one yourself!

I voted for no based on the thread title...and then read the question and should have voted yes...poll fail!...

BAN ANCHORING! Anchors are w.....

If you can't putt normally...take 500mg of MTFU and crack on!

Never wrote, that I thought it gave an advantage, I simply wrote, that in my opinion, when putting the putter should be swung freely and not anchored.

I've have tried both belly and broom handled putters in a shop, the belly putter just felt alien and wrong, as for the broom handled putter it does create an easy pendulum swing but would require practice to master. That written, using a normal putter takes practice to master, so what's the problem with banning the anchored ones, in the end it's all just practice.

Ahh so the poll is a fail because you didn't read the question before answering, oh well, lets hope when the sign on the park bench, says "Do not sit down, WET PAINT" you read first :ears:

I voted no ..
why ?
because IMO it only became a real issue when guys started winning with them , its doesnt automatcaly help you win tournaments you still have to get that little white yoke in the stinking hole

Poor example, what you should say is...

If you read the sign saying paint dry and then you sit on it and underneath that sign it says...actually paint wet.

Yes ban them.

And then he got a bit confused and ended up saying they should just leave it as it is....

I have no such ambiguity. Ban the big ugly cheat-sticks! ;)

I voted no, they have been around for years, you can't retrospectively ban them just because you don't fancy them, or they don't look right. If they are against the spirit of the game, then they have been since about 1970.

When the ban was first floated I was under the impression that the rules already covered it, but just weren't being enforced.

14.1 makes no mention of anchoring, just pushing, scraping or spooning. As putting is more of a pushing motion than a normal stroke it would be truer to the original rule to ban that rather than anchoring, but that is obviously nonsense

I don't really think much of a general advantage is gained if it was an advantage every pro would be using one.

I voted yes, but with the proviso' that it is the anchoring that is banned and not the equipment.

I have no problem with people using a long or broom handle putter so long as it's not anchored.

I felt them same, but I read the rule book, there is no mention of anchoring, which is obviously why they are proposing to amend the rules.

My point is you can't just change the rules on a whim, just because you think it looks wrong. I think lefties look wrong but I don't want them banned :D

But they're not banning it because it looks wrong, they're banning it because it IS wrong.

please don't call me a geek ! but I've been reading the rule book to see why anchoring is wrong. I can't find it.

I know the proposed amendment is to 14.1 but this doesn't even allude to anchoring, or fixing the club.

I started off as pro ban, but to my mind the rules don't back me up.

I don't use a belly putter or have no desire to do so, but it seems to me that the R&A want to re write the rules just because a couple of majors have been won using a long putter.

I think that's a bit of a dangerous precedent

Big NO vote from me.

I own one and stopped using it because I was no better with it I actually have cut it down to 34inch as I like the weight of it but saw no benefits as using it as a belly putter after numerous attempts.

There's been no issue with these being used for the past 30 years but someone finally wins a biggie with it and suddenly rule 14.1 needs rewriting because if it. Make no mistake it is a complete rewriting of it because nowhere in the current rules does it mention anchoring under that rule and further more they'll still allow the Kuchar style which to all intents and purposes is anchored just in a different way!

Keep them let them use them everyone can if they choose and the number of wins with them compared to without shows no evidence of it being advantageous over the rest of the fields.
