An idiots guide to lasers, range finders and GPS

Just to add to the confusion.
What about a smart phone that has a GPS capability but NO apps that have compass, temperature, slope, etc., etc.
I know that such illegal apps could, at some stage, be installed but are currently NOT installed rendering the phone totally unble to access such information.
I would argue that in it's current state it WOULD be legal to use on a golf course that permits the use of DMD's.

Slime.

I agree your conclusion - I've yet to meet one like this but, as I posted already to this thread (I think 'cos it was some time back), one will exist one day (or may exist today)

checking, I actually posted "...this is what basically rules out using Smartphones as DMDs (but there will inevitably be one at some point )"

Lasers: Don't shine it in your eye, point it at something you want to measure

GPS: Check your course/ regular courses are covered. Look at the screen, read the numbers.

When I need to measure 2 club lengths I use a club, which makes it a DMD

Worse, we more often measure closest to the pin by counting footsteps so my foot is a DMD. My foot has the ability to detect changes in temperature and barometric pressure, as it gets more painful the colder it gets. It also can measure slopes, as it again hurts more the steeper the slope. It also measures how soft the putting surface is, because it hurts more on very soft ground.
I suppose I had better chop it off before I play tomorrow :(

Check with the rules committee first, they may allow feet as DMD's so long as they don't work as a compass .

So in the medal on Saturday I said to one of my playing companions as he took out his DMD gizmo - 158 yds to the pin? He looked and said - yes - how do you know? I told him I had worked it out by looking. And I had - using the 150yd post as a guide. Oh well. I'll keep my £££s in my pocket for a rainy day :)

Great - as long as the 150 yard post is accurate.
We had one that was 12 yards out a while back......

Oh dear - and if the marker post is 12 yds out then does a DMD not give...oh I'm not going there as I lose. Remember I have only ever suggested they should not be allowed in club competitions when by definition all players know the course - or can know the course - equally well. That said I have to admit going onto Google earth to check some distances on my track so I can certainly see the value of them.

If, by definition we play a comp on our home course and can all know the course equally well, why would you ban DMD's' as, by your definition, no one gets any advantage??

You can know it equally well but that doesn't remove uncertainty from the mind - especially when you are playing from a position you do not often find yourslef in. But pleeeeze - I have reluctantly had to accept that I am pissing into the wind in trying to convince others that DMDs should not be allowed in club competitions. I accept I am currently in 2nd place in a two horse race on this. But that doesn't stop me believing I am right.
