Errr .. i think it is a traditional descriptor of things Scottish (the modern terminaology)

My daughter was on year exchange study at a university in Ohio USA a few years ago. Apart from constantly being mistaken for an Australian, an American student being polite asked her where she came from. She replied England, Oh My! actually I think they've got this one right like a lot of the oldies on the forum will. I can't visualise in cms or mms but at least a yard is close to a Metre so I can almost do that.
By the way, I noted that you used the American spelling for your meters

to be pedantic, US weights and measures are based on pre-1834 English units, ie they predate Imperial units.
