I have one and use it to browse the internet, read books and watch films via the external SD card you can insert. I think is great and if it was smashed tomorrow I would get another. If you want something that gives you lots of apps then get an ipad but for general things a Fire HD is great.
I think mine is the 8" version as that gave the best combination of size, memory, screen resolution, price. I'd recommend one. Feel free to ask any specific questions.

My eldest daughter had one, I set it up. The OS is nice and intuitive, she uses for Ebooks (which predictive text changes to Ebola!), streaming Netflix, prime, some games and light internet browsing and email. Cracking piece of kit for the money. As an alternative, my younger 2 both have an acer 8" tab running android and they are good too, and cost about £45 each. Battery life is not as good as the fire though.
So for me, 4/5. Dropped a point because it's not an iPad!

I've had both apple and android and Apple wins on most fronts except initial cost and customisation.
Both mean little to me so the Apple wins.
For young uns cost is a factor, wouldn't want to give a clumsy kid a £500 bit of kit where a £50 android tablet would do.

Fine for general browsing/ youtube etc.. They are a bit slow compared to an ipad, but then £40 compared with £200 you have to expect some difference..
Don't get the cheapo 7" ones. They feel old hat. The 8" ones are much nicer. They have them in Currys from memory so pick them up and handle them there.

pulled the trigger £34, the fact it's tangerine in colour will mean a case will be purchased if it doesn't fit into the one I have for the old tablet

FireOS is Android.
The Fire tablets are alright. Not great not awful, just alright. Great for kids or as a no-frills "disposable" tablet. Exactly what you'd expect at the price.

Struggled to get youtube running on mine, but I didn't really spent too much time on it.
I think the Fire comes really into its own if you also have an Amazon Prime account. It is a very convenient way to watch that. I am not using it for books which I am reading on the paper white. And I found browsing clumsy compared to the iphone. But for £40 it's a good movie viewer.
£40 gets you the 7" one, unless you are buying second hand. Fine for kids but the 8" ones are much much better. I would not say it is better than an ipad or a Samsung equivalent but at around £90 they are great value. Work out what you want from a device first and then see if it suits. The good thing is that unlike both of my kids ipad minis the screen on my Fire does not crack when you look at it too sternly. I hate Apple :angry:
