Ok so started taking lessons back end of November. I made quite big improvements in a relatively short space of time but I seem to have stagnated over the last couple of weeks and it's getting frustrating. Once I start practicing something I usually pick it up fairly quickly so I'm not the most patient with this kind of thing. I've got my 3rd lesson tomorow evening so I'm really hoping for some positive feedback and additional help to keep my rate of improvement going. I kind of feel like if i havent got it after 2 weeks hard practice i never will which i know probably isnt the case but how long is reasonable? One thing I have noticed is that I hit the ball pretty well on the range but can't seem to replicate it on the course.

Improvement is never a straight line graph. Think of it more as a climbing saw blade. Hopefully, the periods of "stagnation" are just the new skills becoming a foundation, allowing them to be built upon again.

Golf is not a game and never will be one where your improvement goes on a linear scale. It will have its ups and downs. A lot of that can be to you spending too much time concentrating on the new thing you have learned, so maybe not focused like you should be on what you are doing. Everytime you think you have cracked it this game will come up and bite you on the BALLS:o.

Just take every shot as it comes and give it your up most concentration. If you can play, you can play and it will all come together as you play and get more experienced. Other things that will help improve your scores is not just hitting the ball well, but learning to manage your way round the course better.

Good luck Andy and I hope your lessons help you improve your game.

Sometimes you have to take the licks, go backwards to come out better at the end. Just because you aren't seeing the results you'd hoped for doesn't mean it isn't working. Stick with the drills and the changes and putting in the work at the range, BUT once you are on the course use the new swing unquestionably and without thought. Your range work will lay the foundations and you just have to trust that once you get out there it'll start to come together. It may not feel like it for a few rounds but once it clicks the results will be really good and you'll wonder what the problem was

Well I've just got back from the range and frustratingly I hit some really nice shots when it all clicks but it's just not consistant and I'm constantly fighting the urge for my hands to go towards the ball from the top of my back swing rather than dropping behind me to avoid the over the top swing. I'm sure it's just a case of perseverance and waiting for the changes to become natural but I'm not used to having to wait this long to become proficient at something with this much practice. Golf is the ultimate love/hate relationship. Hopefully my lesson will go well tomorow.

Golf has been the most frustrating and intoxicating experience of my life. Like you I have generally picked things up easily, the more I practice the better I get, but with golf sometimes to become better you must suffer getting worse first. Its a difficult concept to grasp, but acceptance is key to enjoying the long and ultimately satisfying game we call golf.
