unfortunately i hate to admitt it but i am.

Last night i played with a playing partner from my juniour days. he playes once a month as he is now a head green keeper and has sort of lost the passion for the sport.

On the first tee im checking what gear he has treated himself to since we played last around 97/98.

Same Calloway hawkeye Driver (reg graphite)
Same Calloway Hawkeye 3 wood (reg steel)
Same Mecgregor Access (i think) semi blade irons
same shonky putter.
Budget balls

The guys game is is still 100% if not 110%, he's hawkeye would always leave him around 275/280 down the middle, he's 3wood always 220-230 into the par 5's.

The only difference i noticed is i tended to hit my irons 1 iron longer, but he's were bullet straight unlike my sprayers.

So after a round of being shown how to play golf, i know which one i am.

The question is which golfer are you, All the gear no idea or a decent golfer content with what he hits?

Certainly got the gear, and every now and then show signs of having some idea too. Other times are best not mentioned. I do like new shiny stuff though.

I'm neither really. I've not long started playing so i'm using some old titleist dci's that I picked up from a car boot, a set of howson woods and the best thing in my bag a ping putter that a friend gave me though it's probably an inch or so short for me. Despite this though I've only played 6 rounds about once a month and I've scored in the 90's everytime compared to my 2 playing partners who are both members at the club we play, have much better kit and struggle to get into the low hundreds. I am planning on getting better stuff as the scores hopefully go down.

I'm a bit of a kit whore in every sport I play, but my golf gear is very tame.

I have the same Lynx Black Cats that I've been using since 1998
The same 3 wood that I've had for 10 years
I have one pair of IZOD golf trousers
Two actual golf polos
Cheap £40 nike Golf shoes (I'm getting some good quality adidas ones for Chrimbo though).
A rusty wilson putter which isn't even mine. (new one at Christmas).

The only new golf gear I've bought in 12 years is two new bags - well an old 2nd hand one from eBay which broke after a few months, and a shiny new Mizzy Aerolite, which I'm using for the first time this afternoon - a new Driver, which I paid less than £100 for and a new lob wedge.

I'm happy with my clubs for now, but will upgrade my irons once I'm playing more regularly and have got my handicap down a bit.

Really hate this phrase. Always comes across a pure jealousy. Not a trait I find particularly endearing.

So what if someone isn't that good, it's their money and if it makes them happy, if they want a nice set of clubs, bag, electric trolley, GPS etc so what.

Am I one ? Yeah probably, but I'm starting to get some idea now :D

westy. im not jealous by any means, it was more a reality check that how much i have spent this year really hasnt improved my game an awfull lot. Like you said i enjoy having a nice bag of sticks, i work for my money and if i want sticks that make me smile so be it, but this year ive pretty much revamped my complete bag, looking at ball specs, yada yada yada, when infthat £1500 i spent would have been better spent in course time and playing lessons.

Has shiney sticks made me better, 2 or 3 off my handicap at most, thats £500 per shot. Would a £1000 in lessons have made me better, dam right. jesus thats a 7 day membership

I'm with Westy. Yes I'm learning the game but does that mean I have to play with rocks and ancient battered sticks? I'd rather spend a little more on kit that will last than buy a beginners set and want to upgrade after 12 months.

I think the phrase is better suited to golfers who have all the latest stuff and think they are amazing when in fact they are toilet.

but that's not a reflection on it being a bad thing to have nice gear. That's a matter of priorities or a belief that having the latest kit will make you a better player. I take lessons, have nice gear and think I have a lot to learn. Maybe we should stop the rhyming bit and just refer to the people in question as talentless, poncy knobs :D

How about

'It's not fair, I'm much better than he is. It's not my fault I spent all my youth bunking off school to play golf and now can't get a decent job to buy the things I want' :D

Doesn't really have the same ring to it though does it :D

just kidding folks ;)

Definitely all the gear and mostly no idea.

Nothing worse then being a single figure player with tour bag and matching clubs and you play with a guy off 18 plus with a 25 year old set of clubs and they shoot a much lower and you look like a total KN*B.

it seems there is a small percentage who play well with older gear. I love seeing good golf played with oilder equipment.

what was scary was when my friend downed he's hawkeye in favour of a bash with my tm burner - 50 yards longer!!!!! jesus!
