Hi,

I don't usually post but thought you boys may be able to help. I'm going on holiday to the Algarve and want to get a sneeky round in. I've played Vilamoura Old and Quinta de Logo South which were excellent but want to try something different this year.

Any recommendations?

Cheers

I can only recommend Salgados. We were in Albufeira (2006) for a stag and had a couple of rounds there. Lovely course, great spot and good on course facilities/helpers. Clubhouse was being (re)built when we were there, so was a bit temporary, but the course was lovely.

I enjoyed it so much I came back home, re-joined my golf club and have been re-smitten with the game ever since!

Pinta,Gramacho,Penina.Palmares,Quinta de Cima,Ria,Silves,Pine Cliffs the list is endless. Not many courses I wouldn't play again in the Algarve but I'm afraid to say Salgados is one I wouldn't hurry back to....each to their own tho.

My two favourites are San Lorenzo and Villamura Old Course. A word of warning though, if you are planning to play Villamura Old make sure you have a handicap certificate with you. It is the only course I have ever been asked to produce one!

my advice, keep away from the big names and the big prices.Lots of top golf to be had at the lesser known clubs and for less than 40 euro, plus no 5 hour rounds!!!
Best time to go is March and April. The smaller clubs also make you feel welcome, and make for a more relaxed day.

At the top end of the budget scale Monte Rei and the new Faldo Course at Amendoeira are new ones to add to the must play list alongside old favourites like San Lorenzo and the Old Course (brilliant design refresh from Hawtree a few years back)

Of the more affordable courses I thought Parque De Floresta was good fun and Laguna and Pinhal in Vilamoura have benefited from a bit of TLC of late

My favourite course on the Algarve is the Rio Formosa course at Quinta Do Lago. Superb track, really tight in places with some superb holes.
Vilamoura Old is a nice course, but beware the handicap certificate warning as posted above.
Vale do Lobo "Royal" course is quite a good test, great par 3's (apart from that joke hole along the top of the cliffs), didn't much care for the "Ocean" course.
If you don't mind a little travelling, we nipped over the Spanish border while we were there and played a course called "Islantilla"..3 x 9 hole loops, with two in particular that stood out as superb. It was considerably cheaper to play than the courses on the Algarve, the only downer was that a lot of building work has gone on there since our very first visit and now almost every fairway is flanked by awful villas painted in every colour of the rainbow. It looks like toytown! But if you can ignore those I think you would be pleasantly surprised with the layout.

Pinta Gramacho and Palmares would be my choice in Alvor region, they won't break the bank either and are good tracks.Faro region Quinta do Lago,Pinheiros Altos great but more expensive.

I was disappointed with the Millenium, but that was ten years ago. There is a lot of walking from green to tees so a buggy is essential.
