Airport Car hire

I hire cars regularly from airports, initially hire the smallest car you need. Then when you get to the desk, they will typically offer you an upgrade for little money.

^^

This, I always do this when hiring abroad and it works out cheaper than hiring a larger car upfront.

Will reapond later in full but satnav a must

Dont listen to him, he can't even spell. That aside a lot has already been said. The main one, check the car. I normally only have the bog standard insurance but upped it when in Catania. 2, reasons. It had only done 7 kilometres and was immaculate. Also every car in Italy literally has a dint, bump, scratch on it.

get the cheapest you can, a cars a car. Don't be fooled by Avis, hertz etc promising to be better, there not.

I have used http://www.holidayautos.co.uk/ many times. Consistently the cheapest of the more reputable companies and they offer a free cancellation policy.

Also good http://www.jet2carhire.com/?clientID=605491 You don't have to fly with them.

The Telegraph has a good 35% off the normal price at http://www.affordablecarhire.com/en/home/index at the moment. www.telegrapgh.co.uk/carhire2016 quote discount code telegraph35

I just switched from Holiday Autos to the telegraph offer and saved £30

But make sure you get excess protection from an independent agent like http://www.icarhireinsurance.com/

DO NOT PAY EXTRA CDW WAIVER AT THE DESK

PS Ryanair look to be cheaper than HA at the moment.

Cheers for all the input folks.

One final question...are you expected to return the car washed???

Having traveled up ans down a farm road end numerous times its now has lots of cow dung stuck to the side. :D

What not to do when returning car to airport at 5am...

Leave phone and wallet inc all cards and driving license in the car...

I did this last week in Zurich... There was none on the desk so waited till last minute before I had to get my flight...

Thankfully they retrieved it for me and sent it back... Like being without my right arm for a few days.!!!!!

No. They will clean them. You leave cow dung, I have left many layers of mediteranean dust. Don't worry.

For the first time ever today I took the pre pay fuel option, they asked me how far I was driving (about 100 miles) and I paid €8. Saved me messing about getting lost looking for the closest petrol station!

Oh and Ford Fiesta Zetecs are quite nippy!

I use Europcar if I have to hire a car at the airport. Work pays so don't need to worry about the small print as they have prearranged contracts.
Just have to fill it up when returning it, although we have preferential rates in the US so don't need to do it there.
Last 2 times I have had brand new cars....a B class Merc and a Vauxhall Insignia with tons of toys.
There's nothing like driving a new car!

Take photos with your phone of all four corners and the wheels plus anything else before driving off. Make sure your phones location and time stamp is turned on. Do the same on returning the car. I also photograph the odometer and fuel gauge. Stops the toe-rags who try it on and claim for damage or excess miles long after you've got home!
