Arrived nice and early so had a wander in the shop. Met Paul O'Hagan and the photographer (Tom I think- I'm crap with names) and got introduced to the shop manager who was conducting the custom fit.
The fitting bay was about 15m deep so you could actually see how your shots were going and see what the computer says which I find helpful to confirm the computers accuracy.
The fairway woods on offer to me were the R11, Mizzy JPX800, Cleveland FL and Ping K15.
I had about 6-7 swings with each one to see how they felt and to get my technique somewhere near as I don't have a familiar swing with a 3 wood as I don't use one at all (don't use any fairway woods at all).
Got to my second burst with them and this is how I felt the clubs performed:
R11, clubhead felt really solid and the White head was by far not off-putting at all. The shaft was the Fujikura Blur 70g reg flex.
Mizzy was a good club. Hit it fairly well but again the shaft was a reg flex and it was clear I needed a stiffer flex.
The Cleveland was also a good club, felt good off the face and good launch. Managed to get a stiff flex shaft and hit the ball well.
The surprise for me was the K15.... Despite being an old mans club
I found I could hit the club really well with good consistency in dispersal. I'd recommend this club to anyone learning the game as a great game improver. Larger head and well weighted too. Again though a regular flex.
My stats on the computer were quite telling. Averaging and very consistent swing speed of 104 topping at 107. Problem I had was because of the lack of stiff shaft availability the spin on the ball and the shot shape was hard to predict as because I felt the clubhead was lagging behind, leaving the clubhead open and de-lofting the club.
After a chat with the fitter, it was agreed with the R11's adjustment options I was to take one away and when the stiff shafts become available in a few weeks I can swap the reg flex at my local AG store, free of charge and I'm also allowed to use the club now and they weren't fussed if I mark or damage the shaft before handing it back.
Overall I was really pleased with the R11, only complaint I'd have is the lack of the stiff shafts offered to me. But at the end of the day I've walked out of the store with a top of the range fairway wood free of charge. The rest of the fitting was really good and the fitter knew his stuff, willing to offer advice.
After watching Mark and Alex get fitted it was Steve's (Fundy) turn.
I have to mention this: what a ball striker this guy is.
His stats on the computer was showing a swing speed average of 110, 260 CARRY average and 280 roll out average. Very consistent with distance and was just unbelievable to see how far he smashes the ball. I'd love to see his stats with a driver in his hand...
Overall a great day, massive thankyou to AG and GM for organising the day.
Off to AVGC for a knock. Very relaxed and great banter made the round very enjoyable and the company of Alex and Steve (and non forumer Neil) was excellent. Great set of lads and very easy company
we all played average with moments of brilliance and plenty of utter crap thrown in but that didn't matter too much as the banter was flowing all the way around the course, mainly down to the next bit...
Now to the other highlight of the day!!!
Got to say... Alex tee's it like this all day long.
If you spotted the shades, well done. The eagled eyed people will have spotted the BRIGHT PINK castle tee and the illuminous ORANGE ball.
(he did nail this drive in fairness to him)
