Hey guys was asked to represent my home club in a comp and the advise I am after from those that did the same is this

Did you or do you take any notes on your practice round/s?

Its happening next Sunday so likely only get around the course I am playing once due to distance I have to travel.

Not sure how to approach it weather to turn up with sky caddie and go from there or weather to take a few notes for example take a club more on the approach going into the second green etc

Be interested to hear how you guys dealt with it. As you can tell I am new to this type of thing,

Also to note its a match play so no shots etc best score wins

Thanks in advance

I wouldn't go as far as taking notes, but then i'm a sort of just turn up and play sort of chap.

Most of these type of things ar quite friendly, i imagine your oppo would give you a run down of what to expect on each hole if you have never played the course before.

You never know it might work for you, it does for me 3 away comps last year all courses i'd never played before and even managed to shoot level par around Western Gailes and only a few over at Barassie.

Good luck

no notes.

Play once so you know the hole layouts, remember you are not only playing the course but the man, puts a different slant on it.

Whenever I've played in club matches at away courses I've always just tried to familiarise myself with the layout and learn the best place to hit approach shots from.

There's only so much prep you can do for a different course the important thing is to remember its matchplay and work out what best suits you. At away games I always like to be hitting into the green before my opponent just so the pressure is then in him to hit the ball closer than mine already is. Been fortunate enough so far never to have lost an away game! Though that's most Likely luck and I've only played one full season of matches!

You watch it change now I've moved clubs and been selected for an away match next week!

U playing ulster cup hendy? Who for? And against? I played last 3 years but too low now. It's great craic but competitive also. Practice rounds for me were just to get a feel of the course so I have an idea where I'm going. I never takes notes, but do what makes u comfortable and most of all enjoy it.

Yes J its the ulster cup I hear it can be competitive alright lol, for those who don't know the format it's played over a home and away leg. We played home leg last week and won 5-2. However this week its the away leg. I never did play the home leg so not sure what to expect. Its a comp for over 30s who's hc was no lower than 10 the previous year. As stated no shots, I guess its open to any hc but not much point the club sending out someone off 15 hc to play against someone that potentially could be off 10.

I play for newtonstewart and we are playing guys from blackwood I think they call it.

Will sack the note taking however I do have a poor memory lol, but will see how I get on in practice round and go from there. Hoping to get a GPS with bunkers etc as the GPS I use at the mo just has yardage to green

Course planner is a good shout if its an unfamiliar course and your memory is bad lol
I would try to take a caddy too, not for advice per say but more for company in case you play someone that's not really talkative or if they have a caddy as it gives you support too.

Yea good shout on the caddie gives me someone to chat to in the car on route as well lol

Last thing I want is to land up there heading out and the other person has one. Would be a long round and of course added pressure lol.

Always played it as I found it and if unsure about what was ahead I would ask my opponent for clarification. I always found it best not to think too about an away match before I played it. Too much projecting what might happen if I did this or that. Best just to deal with each shot as it presented itself to me. But that's just me.

Also..As your post says you are representing your club both on the course and in the clubhouse. Make sure you give your hosts a good reason to welcome you and future members.

Good luck and try to stay relaxed, a light grip of the club on early holes used to work for me.

Always aim for the middle of the green on full shots at away courses. Your opponent might take on that tight pin and may also miss - don't give him the hole by taking the same line.

Good advice this as you won't know the slopes on the green so why try to get to the flag. Middle of green and you are not going to be too far from the hole on any green - pretty solid likelihood of two putt and always a chance of a single putt.
