Just back from the doctor and he has told me I am diabetic. Not on medication yet but trying to manage through diet. Are there any other forum members who are diabetic who can give me any general advice.

I normally drink Lucozade or Powerade drinks while I'm playing and munch on fruit bars but I'm guessing these are out now as they are full of processed sugars. I understand that bananas are still ok but I need to know what sort of things I should be eating drinking now as I play (and off course too)

The worse thing is I've got to test myself by pricking my fingers with a blood monitor twice a day. I have a huge needle phobia at the best of times so this actually sickens me to my stomach to have to do. Starting that tomorrow and already got sweats!!!

Blimey mate....just read this after sending you a PM. Bad luck....I've been testing myself for this every six months for years.....it's in my family.
I don't know much about it but there must be plenty of info out there....I know what you mean about needles though, worse than a snakey downhill 8 footer.

Homer mate im feeling for you , that stuff cant be easy . To be honest its one of those things that has spurred me on to lose weight and get fit etc. I cant give you any tips as its not what i know.
all the best!

Bit of a shock I am sure Homer. My mum is diabetic so, like Realgolfer, it is something I keep an eye on. My mum is a bit worse off in that she requires insulin injections but she assures me that it does not take long for the needle phobia to disappear. Cannot offer much in the way of practical advice save for the fact that most things can be fitted into your diet in moderation and as the occasional treat. Certainly my mum eats plenty of fruit.

sorry to hear that, I'm sure you'll get through it though and get used to the needle. Do you know which type of diabetes it is, 1 or 2? As any tips people can give will probably depend upon that. Unfortunately I am unable to help.

Homer ask your doc for advice on the best foods to eat-I suggest just drinking water during a round.

Good luck and try and keep your sugar levels balanced.

I'm not diabetic but ive done this test on a friends kit several times and if it's the same set up - don't worry it's nowhere near as bad as a needle. You get a little plastic thing that looks like the sort of pin you would waymark a board map with and have to pr1ck the finger to get a blob of the red stuff to touch on a litmus type strip. This gets slotted into the little machine that reads your count.

I can't stand needles or blood but this didn't seem anywhere near as bad. A small scratch and a blob of blood the size of a lentil and it's all over.

Sorry to hear you have it but take heart, my friend has lived with it for decades with no ill effects. It's a shock to the system to start with but well managed , it shouldn't change anything for you.

take care mate

Gutted for you M8. Don't know a lot about it other than third hand info. Suggest that you discuss with your doctor about your golf obsession and carry with you the right range of foods as he/she (sorry HR PC talk) recommends.

Regarding your blood testing, is there someone who could give you a little prick while you are looking away - you might even enjoy/get used to the experience :p :p

Homer that is bad news my thoughts are with you.
I have a pal who has had great success with a book I gave him on the original GI diet.
I know this has increased in popularity lately and it has helped my man for the last 6 years.
Looking in the mirror I should get back on it!!

Leftie

The wife has said she will do the honours. You should have seen the blood lust in her eyes this morning. Checked with here re the little prick just to emasculate my male ego and she says that everything in "that" department is fine and working. PHEW ;)

I beleive its not a needle you use but a thingy that doesnt look like one, there are loads of drinks you can use on the course and fruit you can eat, think yourself lucky that you are not insulin dependant and have to inject yourself twice a day.

Also it doesnt mean you can not have a beer, you will learn to manage your sugar levels so you will be able to have a beer or two.

Parmo

Sadly my beer drinking days are over. I did so much damage to my pancreas when I was taken into hospital (about an hour away from croaking) that my body now treats alcohol as a poison and reacts very badly.

Means no beer, no using wine in cooking, no chocolates with alcohol in etc. S**t life but I'm still better off than many others

Forgot to mention, there is a new drug out that can control non insulin dependants, ask you qwack about it. Some people treat it as somethibg positive as you will adopt a healthy lifestyle and you learn about nutrition not to mention your fitness levels with improve with both.

Bad news mate, sorry to hear that but i dont think its something to get stressed out about. A new challenge to look on it positivly. I know a few ppl who are in your situation and to be honest after a few weeks mate you kinda forget you have it (apperently) Everythin will just become second nature( like dying for a piss first thing in the morning,) You can prob do ya blood test whilst having ya first dump of the day:D

Well we may not of got off on the best foot but all the best my mum has it and has had for years and controls it through dite.

All the best and keep up the golf.
