Advice on what irons to consider?

Looking for a few recommendations, I'm currently using an older set of irons I've had 10/11 years. Cleveland cg7 tour irons.
Have served me well but looking to change, nothing too wrong but just feel like something new as much as anything else.
The have traditional lofts- 4 iron 24 degree, 7 iron 34 degree, PW 46 deg, etc.

I'm only back playing this year after 5 years away from game. Current handicap index is 3.8

Feels my distance isn't as good as few years ago, maybe age is coming into play a bit. Now distance isnt a massive deal either once I'm hitting shots consistent distance each time. I'm probably around 150 yard carry with 7i. But still wouldn't say no to getting a bit more

So was thinking about a more forgiving distance style iron. Something like mizuno jpx, Callaway Apex, TaylorMade p790, Wilson c300 forged. All of which would be a couple degrees stronger per club than what I currently have

I carry 2 wedges- 52* and 58*. As I said pw is 46*
I have room in bag for another club as I've only 13 clubs

Stronger lofted irons probably means a 45* pw. I was then thinking wedges at 50, 54, 58
Or possibly 50, 56, 60 to fill the gapping

I'm happy to buy second hand as opposed to new and don't mind a model a few years old.

Any thoughts or advice on clubs listed above? Or any other to consider?

Good player, so maybe a player's cavity would be a good fit. Lots of brands to choose from, each with lots of custom options. At your level, I would be looking at a specialist fitter who knows their stuff.

In terms of brands, I like Srixons, nice understated irons with the option of a hybrid (mixed) set, Mizuno has a few choices, Ping i210 are very nice.

I would be a bit wary of the distance clubs. They seem to have a risk of the odd "hot shot" where the ball comes off fast and goes too far. You might be better recovering distance through a middle weight shaft which will allow you to move the club a bit faster. The player's cavity clubs should be around that 34*#7 and 46*#W you are looking for. I demoed the TM 790s and hated the feel. Apex are good, but a pro short iron, non-pro longer iron set might work.

Here is Golf Digest's player clubs hot list for this year

Thanks, good advice there. I'll do a bit of research.

I'm not worried about using a "bigger" club head if it works. I'll get over my ego in that regard if it means results are good. I'm already using lightweight shafts- dynamic gold SL in x100 so light but quite stiff
Maybe softer flex would help with a higher launch and gain distance

A combo set could be a good option to consider

Where are you in Ireland? I'd be looking for a good fitter with access to a range of kit. If you have been out of the game for 5 years, you could take a look at some new drivers too ......

I've turned into a bit of a fanboy of Sub70 since my recent fitting.

According to Trackman, I gained 13 yards with a 7 iron against my 10yr old Bridgestone irons.

Not crazy jacked lofts.

Worth considering on price alone - and at your handicap level a few different options to choose from

Ya I've been reading about them, seem decent
Only problem as based in Ireland don't think they've any fitting here. Plus probably stung for customs if buying direct

In your position and handicap I'd personally go for the following;

Wilson Staff CB
Mizuno JPX 921 Tour
Srixon ZX7

One of the things to watch for is sole width.

The Dynamic Gold SL was my preferred shaft.

It is worth looking at the True Temper site to see what shafts are currently offered. The Elevate look interesting.

Last fitting I went for the AMT white as a good alternative.

If you are going secondhand probably XP115 were the closest.

Is the Amt a very heavy shaft no?

There’s not much difference in golf clubs feel wise in the high end middle iron market.( ie not blades)
But as stated the cast distance irons can throw up real flyers now and again
I went to ping and was fitted for i210s they are really nice.
But head preference is cosmetic imo.
It’s the shaft that counts at your level.
I would say a fitting was a must ,you can always buy second hand to your spec.

Srixon ZX7 and maybe combo with ZX5, theres not a better club, forged, pretty strong lofts, excellent sole, good shaft options.

I use the 785s which are fantastic, but Im still jealous when i see the ZX7s...
