As I have said in some of my earlier posts, i am going to get fitted for my new driver (G10) next week which should come in at about £200+.
I have started to have some second thoughts though. I am thinking that I might go along to the free fitting to see my requirements and then pick up a second hand G5 and then I'll be able to get my new TM Rossa putter AND maybe a gap wedge that I need all for the same price as the brand new G10).
I may not be able to resist the shininess of the new Driver though.

HELP ME!!!! :D :D

Take your own advice.
I personally don't think its worth the Hype Buying New Season Drivers. The G5 is a very good driver. You can probably get one second hand which isnt too far away from new and shiny.!

Hi Atticus, I can't speak highly enough of the G5, i used mine last season and got on with it straight away.

I have hit the G10 (I was trying to convince myself a needed a new driver) and it faired just as well. BUT I didnt really notice any difference in length or consistency. Although I preferred the sound of the G5.

hope i've helped a little . . . decisions decisions

I just bought (or should say bought for the wife to give me for xmas) a Cobra F series for £80, it maybe a coupld of years old but unless you are one of these people with a new driver each year looking to buy their game I would go for the value to performance one.

Thanks for your prompt relpies
Swaying towards 2nd hand now.
This is my first new driver in about 4 years Parmo. New legislation requires me to upgrade. I wouldn't if I didn't have to.

30 putts per round, 13 or so drives per round - says it all. I can vouch strongly for my TM Daytona, it has instilled a lot of confidence on the greens - lovely weight and feel, have now binned mallets for good!

There is bugger all difference bewteen the G5 and G10. Ping seem to be experts at milking big money from people who have to have the newest thing on the market. I don't agree with what they do and as a result I wouldn't buy Ping out of priciple.

When I busted my F-Speed I grabbed a 454 comp (2008 legal) and my pro can carry this 260+ in crap conditions with wet range balls. I paid £70 for it which is astonishing value.

My fitting isn't until Tuesday, so I haven't really made my mind up yet.
I was in Auchterlonies in Dundee yesterday and had another wee shot of the TM Rossa Monte Carlo and it really is wonderful. They were also selling brand new G2s for £99 and G5s for £169. So everything points me towards getting 3 clubs for the price of one at the moment.
In case anyone is thinking "why don't you get the G10 AND your putter" I'm afraid that that is just impossible financially. I've been told I have in the region of £200 and that's my lot! :(

Atticus, I know how you feel I too had to change my Driver due to new legislation, I tried the G5 but opted for the G10, both were easy to hit but personally I found the G10 much more forgiving (play off 12 by the way).
I think Auchterlonies are overpriced as I got mine fitted for £185 at Greaves in Glasgow, I also know that Noah's Ark in Perth are £185 fitted.

Well, had a great experience yesterday and I've decided to buy the new driver and get my putter later in the year.
For those of you who are interested I was recommended to get a 9 deg with a V2 stiff shaft. Here are the numbers..

Averages.
Club Speed ....107.4(mph)
Ball speed ....155.3(mph)
Carry..........241.2(yds)

To be fair, they didn't really improve on my current driver as it turned out I was playing with the correct club (9.5*S)
but it was an interesting experience and I would highly recommend it.

Interesting, Atticus.

I've done the custom fit thing, too, through the Titleist Fittingworks Tour Van. Just shows what a small difference in speed can have on which shaft they recommend.

My averages on the Titleist 907 D1 were
Club speed .... 103 mph
Ball speed... 150mph
Carry..... 245 yards

This was with a Graphite Design REGULAR shaft, half inch short, 10.5 degree loft.

A lot of my friends were surpised that I was recommended a regular shaft but it certainly get the ball speed up and I'm not complaining.

You obvioulsy have a lot of natural hand speed and a nice shallow upward hit on the ball by the sounds of it.

You must have been up at the higher end of the regular scale. The guy yesterday was talking about me using an "X" FLEX because he reckoned that I was in the higher side of the Stiff scale. In the end we both agreed that I was more comfortable with what I was using already.

I spoke to the guy yesterday about my quandry regarding whether I should by brand new driver or go second hand and his viewpoint was that your whole game is based on hitting fairways regularly and that I should definately go for the fitted driver and get my putter in a couple of months when the season starts.
I tend to agree with him when I think about it as the amount of strokes (not to mention balls) I lost last year through my erratic driving was horrific. I would have had to one putt every green to get those strokes back. Also, every time I hit a bad drive with my 2nd hand G5, I would have been cursing myself for not getting my custom fit G10. So I have decided to get the shiny new driver in the end.

Getting back to your numbers John, did you hit your balls onto a driving range or was it a simulation thingy?

Sounds like good advice, Atticus. These guys really know their stuff.

For my fitting we used the practice ground with the Titleist launch monitor. With my old stiff shafted driver I wasn't getting enough backspin (it was 1500 rpm) so my ball flight was real low with lots of run. Very prone to duck hooks. The new driver upped the spin to 2500 so getting a lovely higher flight now, better dispersion and the ability to carry more fairway bunkers. Much more fun!!
