Advice - how would you play this hole...

the arithmetic is that which ever route you select to lay up from has to deliver the best overall score - and v going for the green from the tee, probably an average of under 3 (takes into account that not every lay up tee shot will work either!)

I have to admit slight surprise that you are better from 70yds than 20, from a similar lie; there's always a perception of this based on the memory of failure to get get down in 2 from 20 against the success of getting down in 3 (and sometimes 2) from 70...mind can play funny tricks (there's also the related issue that laying up to 70 is more common than laying up to 20 ie from 20 you are coming off the back of having failed to achieve your primary objective etc etc

Anyone ever mention this game is 80% (++) mental? :)

Makes sense although I'm not a great chipper of a bad lie as previous course was always very lush and true - high water table! Have been working on less bounce and more leading edge from closer in which is working a treat so need to develop that shot further to add to my shot-making options. I'm happiest bouncing the club with an open face but am finding it's not often the shot around Brampton.

Plenty to work on this week on course management (holes 1 and 4 predominantly) and short game.

I still don't understand why so many ladies like to play pitches like bunker shots and bunker shots like pitches.... :)

I play my bunker shots the same way :-) I just like the bounce/keeping the loft/cutting under the ball (softly) shot and seeing it pop up high and land softly next to the hole...or in it

But...developed a SW/weight and shaft forwards/leading edge chip from a tight lie this week and found it the required shot 80% of the time around Brampton. Haven't developed that further though to up and over a hazard nor learnt the boundaries of it distance-wise.

I would be attacking this every time. Go in with a positive mental attitude and forget what you've done before. Pick the club, trust the swing and go for it. The lay up seems a harder shot in many ways.

Asses how well your playing, if yr flushing it then peg it up, aim at the middle of the green and fire. If yr swing us a little off that day , then lay up ! Nice hole!!

Duncan - people normally lay up to 70-100 when they are on a fairway. not this kind of hole.

tbf this is a pretty good hole. not straight forward and quite a bit of risk reward.

Lots of comments about 155 yards being "scoring distance" or words to that effect. IMO that's just not true for (amateur) ladies. From that range I'm only thinking about hitting the green, not attacking the pin.

Personally, I'm with your coach Amanda and 90% of the time I'm going to go for the green here but I think in competition it's important to play with whatever swing/ability you've brought to the course. If confidence was low, it makes sense to lay up try to get up down but accept a 4 at worst rather than risk disaster.

I guess the issue is making the carry and stopping it before going into the water at the back. Tough shot; I probably need a five iron to be sure of making the carry. It'll probably hold but i hit everything pretty high, would be tough with a lower ball flight I think.

Definitely a challenging hole!

throw in a touch of wind in and attacking flags is off the menu. its getting it on the green.

easy game golf when sitting at a computer

What's the prevailing wind?

I'm guessing it hurts or is off the left? If so if it drops or switches does that change the odds?

I suppose you have a couple of shots to practice to give you more choices here (tee shot and chip shot) maybe even the use of an intermediate target to see if it helps when you need to aim more left than the tee box.

Could your pro give you an anti right swing / tip for this hole?

Prevailing wind is slightly helping off the left...

I think the key point is the aim to the left and commit to that so yes find a nearer spot to use as a clear aimining point. If I overcook it then the resulting chip on is much easier from that side. I'm going to really look at my set up and play for a draw "left is best"!

FD - I too hit it high so stopping it not really the problem. I have tried 5 wood and 18 degree hybrid which just stick but the ground is harder now!

Today's plan - nail the 5 iron and see where that gets me!

Whatever play you make on that hole, whether it's laying up to 70 yards, 20 yards or going for it the one thing you probably need to be able to do is accept the consequences of the shot you choose.

So if you go for the 70 yard option because you thought it was the best option at the time, and it doesn't come off then it doesn't matter. No-one executes the plan well every time. Deal with it and move onto the next hole.

If you keep failing to execute then that's when you might want to reconsider your options.

Far too much analysis going on here for the good of your head, Amanda. Just get up there and whack it :fore:

(The ball, that is, not your head) :)

My advice would be simple approach what club do you hit that comfortably carries 150yards, well hit one more club than that and swing within yourself. Then take 2 putts and walk off the green to the souf of Patrick Stewart in your head saying "we'll done Amanda your officially #EPIC"

Nice post Duncan

5 iron option today and pulled it into the trees on the left...beats fading it into the water on the right!

So then took 17 degree hybrid to try and thinned it into the water.

Then took wedge, sand wedge and 1 putt...

It's still telling me the lay up is currently my percentage option on that hole.

Mind you I was striking the ball like a proper numpty until about the 10th today. I blame the 7.46 tee time - far too early!

Get out of your scratcher earlier ya woos.
As you get a shot on the hole, I would play it conservatively until such time you have more confidence with the tee shot.

What's that first sentence Bob??!! The second I understand :-) I agree...pro says the longer I leave it to go for it the longer it will be etc etc but right now I just don't make it anywhere near enough to either justify it or get confident with it. Weirdly he suggests a lay up on the 1st which is a shot I fancy making more and do! So perhaps some mental frailty but, either way, I do feel a wedge/wedge option is likely to result in a 3 or 4 most times and cannot say the same about going for the green.

Edit - out of bed!! I get it!! I'm awake early these days - must be age - but golf before 8am feels wrong!

This is a little like out first hole in that you really ought to go for it but the penalty for getting it wrong is far more severe than laying up. We have a ditch that is between 160 and 200 yards to carry, normally into the breeze. Being the first hole ,many lay up, take 2 x 6 irons then pitch on and hope for a putt or 2 at worst. It's low SI so almost everyone gets a shot and you're not displeased with 2 points. If I go for it and clear the ditch I have a straight forward 7 iron and 2 putts for a par but it's that carry - make it and you're off to a good start, miss it and in a Medal you could be out of it...

If 2 wedges and a putt or 2 works for you then I'd keep doing it.

Try and make the carry if you play a bounce game, maybe take a couple, until you're confident naking the shot.
otherwise - Lay-up Girl!!
