There’s a lot of talk right now about adjustability when it comes to different golf club designs. It is the new catch-phrase in golf for 2009. But when you hear the term adjustability people are usually referring to drivers or shafts being adjusted.

Although a company by the name of S. God who developed the first adjustable loft + face angle driver has come up with another one of golf’s firsts. This one is called the “Viper Wedge” and its interesting feature is that you can adjust its bounce.

But will anyone actually use it you ask? Probably not…but it’s still the most outside the box design so far when it comes to the recent golf club adjustability allowances by the governing bodies - well at least since Nike and Taylormade had you believe that they invented the adjustable driver.

Nike and Taylormade want you to believe that they were the first to invent the new catchy adjustable loft and face angle drivers that you are hearing about…like the Taylormade R9 and the new Nike Str-8 FIT but I don’t think S-God or would agree with that. As usual it is just another great marketing pitch based on hype to generate and boost sales for two of the big golf companies.

I wonder what the odds are of adjustable wedges being the next big thing in the golfing world by 2010?

Someone once marketed an adjustable iron, such that you only needed one. About 20 years ago. Ideal for holidays. It had adjustable shaft lehgth and loft. To me, this was the first adjustable club. Obviously it was in breach of the rules, as you had to adjust it between shots.

Not sure that there will be such a demand for adjustable wedges as most players carry a number of different lofts already. Also, it is against the rules to make adjustments to a club once the round has commenced so I'm not sure what the advantage of adjusting one particular wedge will offer.

Trick is, you wouldn't know til you got out on the course. Hard and firm, soft and boggy, who knows?

Same as bunkers. Not til you get out there that you find out how much sand is in them, and what type.

I guess if it has rained, you could lessen the bounce, to cope with compacted sand. But why not have a cheap low bounce wedge in the car, just in case.

I must have about 6 wedges, and I bet I am not unusual as a golfer. I could in theory leave them in the car, and choose which I need according to conditions, but I don't, I like to stick with the same 3. I know how far I can shank them, and I like a bit of consistency in my game.

Seems like an abomimination to me. Although I can see the logic in Drivers or Putters etc that have adjustment possibilities, whether its weights or anything else... To me it seems as if its not quite golf having all this adjustability available...

Okay, the logic is it means you shouldn't need half a dozen drivers or putters, as you can simply move things about. But I think its the traditionalist in me meaning all these adjustable clubs seem to be an abomination...

And an adjustable wedgeseems to be the thin end of... the wedge as far as I'm concerned. A wedge should have simple clean lines & be simply a usabvle feel club. One of the few clubs which should still have an attachment to a simpler time before too much technology got involved in the bag, to remind us what golf is supposed to be about.

Call me a Luddite if you want...
