Had a weekday medal at the club today so decided to play in it after work. Had a look on the computer to see what score was winning in my division and it was a nett 67 (par 70). It was actually a strange experience having a score to shoot for rather than just playing each hole as it comes.

Anyway started quite well but then a 6 on the last 4 holes of the front 9 kind of ruined things and meant I turned in 46 so 4 over nett as I get 7 shots on the front 9. A quick calculation and I realised I needed to shoot -3 gross on the back 9 to win and -2 gross to tie (and probably win on count back). Considering I've never shot a gross under par 9 holes the chances were slim.

What followed was 4 pars and 3 birdies to leave me standing on the par 3 17th tee at -3 gross for the back 9 needing 2 pars to win the medal. Hit a good tee shot to the middle of the green but left my putt 6ft short and then lipped out the par putt. Ok I thought a par on the last for a tie and a good chance of winning on count back. Hit a great drive to leave a 20 yard chip onto the green, the nerves were kicking in at this point and I thinned the chip off the back edge of the green. I composed myself and managed to hit a great putt that burned the edge of the hole but left a 3 footer for the par. I was really feeling the pressure now so took a bit of time to compose myself lined up the putt and...... pushed it!!! Absolutely gutted to lose the medal by 1 shot after such a great fight back on the back 9 but proud to have shot my first ever sub par 9 holes.

Glad to get that off my chest I feel better now.

I actually like knowing what is the leading score - have played a few comps in the afternoon/evening and like to have a target if I'm playing well.

Slightly different scenario but I shot my best ever round (78 gross - 57 net) at a previous club while knowing from the turn that one of the guys in the group ahead of me was playing a shot better than me.

I obviously couldn't be exactly certain of his score on each hole but I had a pretty good idea - it stopped me being defensive to protect a decent card and made me go for shots that I wouldn't have with a decent card in my hand normally.

Hit the pin with a chip on the last which if it had gone would have been a 77 and got into the clubhouse to find out that had I holed it I'd have won on count back - which is what I'd guessed - first time I'd ever broken 80 was a massive consolation though.

That was an exciting read and I'm gutted for you. Cracking effort and hope you go one better next time!
I do wonder if you wouldn't have had the nerves on the last if you hadn't known though.

It's a bit of a double edged sword as I went for everything on the back 9 because I knew I needed to in order to win. I might have been a bit more cautious on some holes if I was just trying to make buffer after a shocking front 9 so maybe wouldn't have made the 3 birdies.

It is the first time in a stroke play type competition I've actually known what would win though so I guess I bottled it a bit.
