Back on thread, where does Mike's comments leave us with this? Do we want to arrange a few regional meetings on a more competitive level than a regular forum meet or are we going to be happier now with just things like Royal Ascot, the NW meet etc?

I think this would be a great idea. I have never played the Belfry and hopefully a few of the lady forumers would able to come. Just hope I can get time off work and that my car would make the journey!

As has been mentioned, I think availability is going to be an issue. Is there to be just 1 regional meet followed by the top 5(?) going to the final? Or will there be a series of meets and the best go through after that?

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea. Its just I see how much effort goes into organising a 4 ball at a venue 20 miles away let alone a full scale "qualifier" at a course 50 miles away.

It s going to need a lot of thought and discussion before a plan can work.

50 miles would be a blessing Imurg.

I'm 320 miles away from the Belfry which is a bit far to travel for a golf day. Shame as I'd love to attend.

How about something for us jocks Mike? Surely GM can get a deal like you's are trying for at the Belfry?

Cheers

Andy

Homer.

If it comes down to one major meet a year, in part organised by the GM team, juicy prizes, (do you get anything for coming last!?), oh, me not you!! Then I would dearly love to go.

Much as I like the regional / national thing, I think the organisation required for it would be labourious.

Mind you, just had to look up where The Belfry is :D

Read through this post with interest. Several ideas which may or may not come to fruition. Up here in Scotland we have had a three outings last year, Rosemount, The Glen and Craigielaw. We've seen different people at each of them. Geographically speaking, there is nowhere ideal "in the middle" of Scotland. People have to travel too far to get to an event. When we went to Rosemount ( love to go again by the way!)it was a 200mile round trip from Edinburgh. The Glasgow / Lanarkshire contingent probably added another 35-40 onto that. One of our Aberdeenshire members was able to get to Rosemount, but all the other outings have probably been too far for him to travel to. That is understandable. At another outing, those of us from the Edinburgh area were just 20 min down the coast. Those from the West and from Perthshire had another hour of travel on top of that.

Now, given that we ( the Scots Forum guys) will go almost anywhere for a game and a bit of banter, you can see the problems we have had in organising our own events.

A national event at somewhere like The Belfry, does indeed make sense as it is fairly central geographically, however it is 5-6hrs drive from the Central Belt the Edin - Glasgow corridor where a fair number of us are from. A one off national event may well interest some of us. There would have to be a fair bit of organisation between us so that transport could be worked out and cars filled with guys who want to go. I would think, knowing some of the others, that there would be a Scottish presence, but it may probably only be a small raiding party ! However thats my own opinion.

I think that a national meet, a one off as suggested in MikeH's post would probably get the best response from the forum members. It would certainly be my preference.

As an aside, the upcoming match at Goswick was discussed and sorted out within a matter of days because there was a core of guys who wanted it to happen. We looked at a venue in the west (Southerness)easily accessible from both North and South M74 & M6 and dodger came up with a better option at Goswick so it was put together relatively easily.

There seems to have been a bit of activity last autumn down south, but if you want an outing to happen, someone has to take it by the scruff of the neck and make it happen. Its well worth the effort really.

I thinks Mike's idea is fantastic AND absolutly ideal.

What a fantastic place for us to have a national meet, who knows it could even be an annual event if the deal is good (and Belfry would have us back)

Like the idea of playing the PGA, staying and tackling the Brabazon. The Belfry is a great place and I for 1, will be in on this meet, all things permitting!

The trouble with a single meet - and I'm all for it by the way - is sheer distance. As Andy said he's 320 miles from the Belfry. Not quite as far but still a bit of a mission for Twire.
Move it further North and it's a long haul for the Kent/Sussex mob, further South and even Tony's going to struggle.

A venue has to be decided and stuck to. Maybe an English meet an the Belfry and a Scottish meet at Gleneagles, Irish meet at Portmarnock and a Welsh meet at Celtic Manor. Problem there is 4 organised events = regional qualifier!!

We've just got to accept that if we have one meet it's going to exclude a certain %age of the forum.

I think I am 329 miles from the Goswick meet.

It can be done.

Just takes a bit of planning, and a willingness to drive for blimmen ages.

I think with enough notice, people with a long drive could probably sort a minibus between them, would make things a little easier. If it was only going to be once a year with a nights stay, its not going to be too bad is it.

Your all welcome at the Castle or we could arrange a game down the coast somewhere. I have contacts at Bogside and West Kildride. Might be worth opening a Scottish thread in relation to this.

Thoughts?

I think the Belfry idea is great and I would be very interested in going. One question though when it said in /mike's post forumers/ readers does that mean that it will be open to everyone who reads golf monthly in which case quite a lot of forumers will probably have to miss out presuming interest levels are high which I am sure they would be. Either way I would definitely like to play the Brabazon so am very much interested.

eaglehunter, rest assured we'd release the date to the forum first so everyone here would have say a week or 10 days head start on non-forumers!

Absolutely positively yes! :) :)
Will have to start going to church on a sunday from now on and pray it's not held when I'm offshore :(
