• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

A temporary leave of my senses

now I need to try to work out exactly how to change my selfish "me and my ball" attitude towards golf into one fit for competitive foresomes.

Wait until you are on the first tee... it should change then. Nothing beats trying to play well when you really don't want to leave your partner into the crap. It can be frustrating if you're playing badly... or if your partner is.... very tough way to golf, a great laugh if you find it suits you.

What have you done with the real Hawkeye? Granted lumbered with me as a partner may have jaundiced your view on the format but I thought you'd rather pluck your eyes out with rusty pliers rather than play foursomes. I don't think your replacement Ads749r is overly keen either so not sure I'll be signing up anytime soon

Played it a lot , won a few board comps too , keep the ball in play and never say sorry , great format , our club runs the Parkstone Trophy , the scratch foursomes , over 55 matchplay team event , 36 holes , played it it last year and we lost in semis at Hankley Common

I actually quite like it as a format but you have to have a partner with a similar game to yours or it can quickly become a nightmare. It's a format used for a county club competition and the first year I was picked for the team the buy I played with was far shorter than me off the tee and started to chase my drives so I played most of my second shots from the rough with the end result we went down 5 and 4. The next year I was playing with a chap who hits a similar distance, similar shot shape and the same sense of humour. We won 3 and 2 which could have been a lot more apart from the insane luck our opponents had.
We have one rule that has to be obeyed by all team members and that is to say sorry before the first tee shot and never again during or after the round.

Well yesterday was the day, we got spanked 4&2 but that aside, I still don't think foresomes is for me. I tried to get myself into the right state of mind and while I enjoyed the company, I can't say that I enjoyed the format but at least I tried. I'm definately happier with my own ball so that's how it's gonna stay.

I hope you've recovered from the trauma. I know how much you hate foursomes! I take it we won't be seeing you trying it again. When we going to have a game at your place?

Really have no issue with Foursomes.

Last Sunday of the month, October to March, we have a Winter Foursomes eclectic where a lower handicapper (up to 15) is drawn randomly with a higher handicapper (15+) and these days are the six busiest lunchtimes in the bar and restaurant as we have a multi tee start and everyone finishes within an hour of each other. The place is rammed to the rafters.

Generally regarded by all as one of the club's best events (except of course by the Foursomes-haters who are known to be seen with their bottom lips sticking out mumbling "half a game...not real golf" :D :mmm:)

The key to foursomes is to partner someone you get on with, and can chat easily to. The rest is a lot easier after that. I like foursomes as a format

That'll be me then. I'm in the same camp as Hawkeye and hate the format with a passion. I've never enjoyed it. Tried it and don't get on with it so won't play it.

Fair play. Not everyone's cuppa Darjeeling for sure. Some of our Saturday roll up guys detest it with a passion calling it a contrivance of Satan.

I always play foursomes with the same mate. Enjoy the banter, and we never have to say sorry. I am happy to play with anyone in a 4 ball better ball.

I think the 75 I shot this morning was recovery enough :whoo:

I've got some time off at Easter, will text you to arrange a game if you are about.

No probs with foursomes personally, first club team match I played in was a foursomes match, thoroughly enjoyed it and have played a few more since.

different mindset needed to playing your own ball obviously, but as it tends to be match play format it appeals to my combative nature.
