After driving into the rough I played a provisional off the tee. I found my drive, knocked it down the fairway and lifted my provisional ball. As I went to play my 3rd shot I realised that I had played the wrong ball from the rough. As it was a stableford I scored 0 but what would have happened had it been a stroke competition?

b. Stroke Play
If a competitor makes a stroke or strokes at a wrong ball, he incurs a penalty of two strokes.
The competitor must correct his mistake by playing the correct ball or by proceeding under the Rules. If he fails to correct his mistake before making a stroke on the next teeing ground or, in the case of the last hole of the round, fails to declare his intention to correct his mistake
before leaving the putting green, he is disqualified.
Strokes made by a competitor with a wrong ball do not count in his score. If the wrong ball belongs to another competitor, its owner must place a ball on the spot from which the wrong ball was first played.
Exception: There is no penalty if a competitor makes a stroke at a wrong ball that is moving in water in a water hazard. Any strokes made at a wrong ball moving in water in a water hazard do not count in the competitor’s score.
(Lie of ball to be placed or replaced altered – see Rule 20-3b)
(Spot not determinable – see Rule 20-3c)

Surely 2 stroke penalty for lost ball and 2 strokes for playing the wrong ball, but what about the provisional that I played then lifted?

There is a 2 shot penalty for playing the wrong ball in strokeplay and so the original has been deemed lost. In effect it would be three off the tee plus the two shot penalty and so I agree with tonto that you're playing 5 off the tee.

Andy, thanks for confusing me even more than I was already. You seem to have a grasp of the rules ok but you didnt answer my question. I presume I must return to the tee, but how many shots have I played?

I believe as your first ball is lost, you'll be playing a new ball off the tee. So 3 off tee and 2 shot penalty = 5 like the others have said.

I have already played, and lifted a provisional so does that not incur a penalty as well as losing a ball and playing the wrong ball? I would think I would be more than 5 off the tee, maybe better to N/R!!!!!!

Forget about provisional once lifted it is cancelled out as ball in play, the only strokes/penalties you can get are related to playing original ball and then wrong ball. Just imagine you didnt play a provisional at all but simply played the wrong ball you thought was yours?? ;)

Agreed. Provisional is irrelevant.

Once you find the 1st ball the provisional is out of play. Even whenever you find the 1st ball and deem it as unplayable the provisional is out. You then would have to return to the tee and play 3 off the tee plus the 2 shot penalty for hitting a wrong ball. 5 off the tee I'm affraid.
IMO
