i'm looking to set myself some goals in this here game. I started playing in Decemeber and my aim is to play off single figures. I'm 32 so i think thats perfectly realistic in the long run.

However i want to set myself a series of milestones and was wondering what people think is a reasonable target to aim for after 12 months in the game?

well?

Take it in stages. Break 100 (if you haven't) and then down in 5 shot increments. You could decide to set some handicap targets but to me makes it harder and puts more pressure on. If you are playing well the cuts will come anyway.

Enter as many competitions as you can so you can put the cards in. Maybe aim for a top 10 in your division, then top 5 and then a top 3.

yeah ive broken 100, just!

might have a look at some competitions to get a feel for the game etc...didnt know there was competitions for newbies like me

A large amount of your improvement will be dictated by your natural ability.

I find I only get out of golf what I put in - play once a week and my scores reflect the lack of practise.

My pal followed football in the autumn/spring and therefore did not play for circa six months, picked his clubs out of the garage when the season started and the football season finished and played scratch golf!! Unfair!!

Another pal was good at all sports and was down to 13 within his first season golfing having never been on a course before and proceeded to drop to circa 5 the following year.

Keep us informed of progress.

Are you a member of a club? If not it will make it harder to play competitions regularly. Do you have an official handicap yet

i'm a member at silvermere and can submit socrecards there to get a handicap i believe...

Get into their competitions and get your card and go from there. As you're only down the road I can always get down there for a game. I haven't played it for a few years but someone told me at the weekend its in good condition

Once you get your handicap it'll be easier to set targets as you'll have a definitive starting point

played the course on monday and despite the conditions it was still good fun.

def up for a game sometime and the course is in excellent condition with the 18th green opened again across the water...

hi mate, I started last august and now 24.7 and hoping to get down to 20 by the end of the year. I'll never be a single figure but I'm 44 so if you put the practice in you may get there but get a handicap and see what happens over the years. just enjoy the game and it should take you down.good Luck ;)

I'll never be a single figure

You might have done had you purchased that lovely set of MX200's a few weeks ago.
But you didn't.
So you won't.
;)

oooo, i want some of those! currently playing with Monty's old Big Bertha's from the 90's so need to update my bag, mizuno clubs look amazing, as do all japanese makes...

my wife is japanese so once i'm good enough, i'm gonna get me some badass Vega blades or something when i'm out there...2000 years of forging samurai swords has defintly paid off!

Agree with Homer, set yourself targets of increments of 5's and go from there. When I broke 100 my next target was break 95. Once I got to 90 I made it clear I would never shoot a 100 again and try to maintain consistency around 90. As you improve you find shots just fall off. It's when you get lower and lower it becomes even more difficult to loose shots off your handicap so just enjoy yourself and good luck. :)
