My old club nearly went bust because they didn't know the VAT rules and ended up getting a £0.5m bill from those nice folks at HMRC. Lucky for them they had a rich benefactor.

Ours is a proprietary club so although the actual fees are pretty much on a level with private members clubs in the area we pay VAT on subs so the feess are 20% higher.

Seems to be mixed opinion on whether the ruling is good or bad for proprietary clubs.

Should all clubs be the same? I can see the arguments both ways.
