Do you have to use your chipper once you get withing a certain distance of a green ?
Or can you use different clubs depending on distance, slopes, tiers etc?
Or can you alter the set up with your chipper to change the flight of the shot, ball position/open face etc ?

I'll answer based on the fact I used to own one.

I never used it beyond about 50 yards out, mostly within 25 yards of the green though.

I guess if you bought a couple of the niblicks in different lofts you could use them for more variety.

Or can you alter the set up with your chipper to change the flight of the shot, ball position/open face etc ?you can change the ball position, but I wouldn't have tried opening the face as the sole was very flat.

I used to own one as well so I will answer this.

1)Do you have to use your chipper once you get withing a certain distance of a green ? No you dont have to use it but it had its role and the situation was there then it would be silly not to use it from around the edges of greens as such

Or can you use different clubs depending on distance, slopes, tiers etc? Of course you could use another club but im not going to start using my driver to chip on from the edge of the green when I have a club that is designed for that use, that carries a heck of lot less risk.

Or can you alter the set up with your chipper to change the flight of the shot, ball position/open face etc ? Well as stated previously it would be silly to try alter what this club does. This club is designed to carry a short piece of rough and then get the ball rolling like a putt. With in my experience a lot less risk that opening up another club for example for someone who is not confident in chipping. I mean your putter is there to putt you wouldnt want to start trying different things to make the ball do a hop skip n a jump the hole so why would you consider changing that?

Not enough camouflage on the trap methinks:D

It was a serious question.
I was just wondering what a chipper owner would do if the ball was in a perfect chipping area but there was a slope or step in the normal landing area or the flag was close to the edge of the green.
Would they still use the chipper or would they also be as comfortable using a 9 iron or SW

Reason why I liked it a lot, was when just off the green I normally like to put, how ever when theres just a bit too much fringe grass for putting I used to like getting the chipper out it would then bobble through that easily enough and then roll out on the green like a putt and I would find it very easy to judge distance. With the design of the club being like a putter it very rarely got caught up in anything and I would have no issue in thinning or blading it or catching it or hitting the ground and knocking it only half the distance.

I think in this scenario they would lay up back to 120 yards, and wedge in.

Sounds like you are after quite a few tips there Bob. Have you bought one?

i might drop my 3 wood when i get my new hybrid and put in a chipper. i will get to single figures this summer and id like to be the only single figure player at the course that uses one. just to show people they shouldnt be afraid to use them.

Mate, I use a chipper, at the moment it is up north as my mate has it , so I am suffering. In regards to the above question I would still use it in this situation, I would not be comfortable using a 9 iron as I find if I have to hit it softer , it goes very wrong for me and I fluff it about 1 yard in front of me.

I have also been known to use it from around 90 to the green. Would be interested in trying a 49 * niblick if anyone has one they don't need.

Cheers

Wouldn't that make 15 clubs?

I am another former chipper owner/user... Never felt comfortable chipping with my irons and have therefore 'suffered' with chipping yips due to lack of confidence with this part of my game...

On purchasing a more up to date set of irons I started having 'issues' with my pitching... Due to the big gap between wedge and sand wedge... Decided that being able to make a confident pitch from 100yds or thereabouts was more important for my game... So chipper had to go to make way for a gap wedge...

Wasn't a bad purchase as it has worked out that I now use the gap wedge for most of my greenside chips and my confidence in this part of my game has risen immensly...

I never used the chipper for shots of more than 25yds...

Usually from about 15 yards in when it just needs lifting a little and, very occasionally, from further out when getting the line right is crucial.

i have seen one fella play shots with his chipper from anywhere you to the red marker and beyond. 110yards. in fact he was pretty handy with it. he was not a serious golfer in any way. casual golfer who enjoyed the odd round. i dont believe this is the right way to go about it though. i would use it for chipping only. anything as you say, over 25 yards is wedge country.

yes. whats wrong with that ? my current hybrid and 3 wood go about the same distance on a good day so im not bothered about losing the 3 wood.
