A Perfect round

Has anyone ever played a round and been satisfied with the round? Did you think - that's as good as I can do?.

I was talking to a mate about it and I dont think you can have a perfect round, for me I would need lots of powers and a few birdies - well outside my ability. But how do you define a few birdies - 2? 8?

I dont think we'll ever be entirely happy.
I played a 9 holer a few months ago and shot 28 points (-5 gross) one par then 5 birdies a par a bogey then another birdie. I came off thinking about the missed putt on the 8th which would have made it -6.
Best 18 hole rounds no matter how good have always left a few shots out there.

Agreed, I had an 85 last week and I was quite happy with most of it except the 3I shank OOB!!!

I hit a 70 round my home course last year,instead of enjoying the round i agonised all night thinking that i could/should have had a 69. The truth is i played out my skin,pitched in a couple of times,sank some long putts etc. Thats the best i have ever played no question.

Actually, yes, I've had what I consider a perfect round (compared with my ability). I smashed my handicap, got up and down every time I had to, sank long putts, found fairways and played great golf from 1 to 18. By the time I was playing 16 I knew I was going to sink a 20 footer because the hole just looked enormous.

I was smiling for a week. It is the one time I haven't looked back and said I could have been 2 or 3 shots better - which most of us do every week

The course was Galgorm Castle in Northern Ireland

i think if we got to the point were we were 100% content with our scores or performances then this wonderful game would loose its appeal. for me anyway. I started playing about 5 years ago and have become addicted, at first i would have been quite content to break 100 (or so i thought) but once i had, 90 was the target, once i was there and now i break 80 i still pick my game to peices. maybe when i shoot a 69 i will be satsfied........Nahhhhhhh.

If i take my home course and then take the best i've ever played each hole - i'd say that (for now) would be the perfect round.

That would be me walking off with 9 birdies, 1 bogie and 8 pars. The best i've scored on it in competition is 88 so i'm a long long way of scoring my perfect round.

That's actually the first time i've sat down and analysed what i've previously scored on each hole and i was surprised that i have scored well on every hole except one which the best i've managed is a bogey (it's a really long par 5 into the prevailing wind up hill with a really tight entry into the green.)

Good question. I suppose we will always "leave a few out there" no matter how good we play. My best ever was a 68 (2 under gross) on my home course. Didn't have a 5 on the card. Sounds pretty perfect for a 6 handicapper, just straight 3s and 4s.......but....still included a bogie at the shortest par 3 and a missed 2 ft birdie putt on a short par 4. Grrrrr.

I've had a few around "proper" courses where I've thought I played pretty well and didn't leave a lot out there...so I guess yes would be the answer. You can't always think about the bad holes, remember the goodies.

One of my favourites was a 75 at Sun City which included a "Porridge" on the 10th hole. Five birdies, too though.

I did the same at Scotscraig the only time I played it. Five birdies in the first ten holes and doubles on the 16th and 17th for a 75. Oops.

Creme de la creme has to be three under for the last 12 holes at the Old Course, though. That'll always live with me. Not my best ever scores but the most memorable rounds.

The best round I have ever played was 74 0r 75, a good few shots away from my best score. Hitting well with every shot, being accurate, doing what you have planned and seen in your mind and scoring well without any duffed shots, is a very satisfying round of golf to me. yet the rounds I have scored best in, I have always been disappointed in several shots through the game and there have been elements of very lucky breaks, like taking 2 on a par 5 when your second was from the light rough when you almost top it from 220 yds is an example, or top one playing to the green knowing its going 30yds through, when it hits the flag and drops dead at the hole.

So yes I have played and been satisfied with the round.....but not very often.

To play the perfect round is still the dream. I've played quite a few perfect sections over several courses but never for the whole round.

I played at Machrihanish several years back and played the front nine in 3 over. It was just one of those times where the ball went where you wanted it to go. Coming back in was a different kettle of fish. Into the wind it was a different story altogether. I've played a reasonable back nine at Carnoustie managing one over par last four holes ! never been asked back on that society outing!

I've played through a summer, a "purple patch" where I could almost name the score before I went out. In one instance my normal partner teed off early in the day, when he told me what he had done, I boldly stated I'd go one better, and I did with a -6 nett. Oh to be able to play like that again.

Nowadays I'd be happy to string a couple of birdies together in a round

Best I've done for 18 holes is 17 pars and 1 birdie at the short par 4 10th, this was at Kirkcaldy golf club when I was 16 playing off 6.

Most birdies in a round is 5, most consecutive birdies is 3.

Ideally for me the perfect round now would be a score of between level and 4 over with 2 or 3 birdies and no worse than a 5 on the card, ain't gonna happen tho'.

I played my perfect back nine recently (one under gross) but tailed off on the back nine. I have had a couple of three over gross scores for the back recently (including the medal on Saturday) but can never seem to get thetwo nines to match on the same day.

I managed to shoot a nett 65 (-5) in the medal and only came second but had two double bogies on two par 3's and missed a number of makeable putts so despite getting cut to 11 I was far from satisfied. I'm not sure a truely perfect round exists.

I was quite pleased with my round today I had 41 points but I immediateley started thinking how I messed up some silly putts and the odd drive. I think the perfect round is impossible to achieve but taking some positives from how you played is as close as you can come.

A real perfect round? Not possible.

A perfect round for me, yes, i.m.o. can be done. For me, a perfect round means nothing silly and playing as good a shot as possible given the situation. If there are no putts under 10 foot and I make no "single" putts, that's 95% good enough for me.

There are 3 holes at mine that are not realistic to par unless I pitch and 1-putt from 40-50 yards. At the other end of the scale, there are at least 5 or 6 holes where I'm within 120 yards of the green, and should be hitting it (G.I.R.) even if I don't make a birdie.

So, I guess it could be a 73 (3 bogeys and 15 pars) or a 77 providing I did the best possible when I just missed the green. For some players it would be no bogeys or loads of birdies. 2 or 3 birdies, no worse than par on half the holes, steady "could have been par" bogeys on the remaining 6-7 holes.

I had a 3 birdie 74 earlier this season. Almost nothing more I could have done.

I was close to being completely happy with a round when I was in my late teens.

It was one of those days when everything seemed to go right, and I was oblivious to what score I was doing - one shot at a time as they say.

Then stood on the 15th tee I realised just how well I was doing, thought about what score I could end up with and promptly doubled it.

Finished birdie bogey bogey for what is still my best gross score, but I still wish I could play those last 4 holes again.

had to be almost purely content with my best ever round. Had to start at the 14th due to a backlog and parred every hole to my 18th - a reachable par 5. Got it up in 2 and stroked home the eagle 15 footer. 69, 2 under and not a blemish on the card.

As near to perfection as I'm ever going to get.

The perfect round will remain a target but realistically unattainable because we will always think we could have done better.
I had my best round recently when i shot a net 69(-2) but was totally unhappy as i had a triple bogey on 10 and a double on 11 after shooting 5 over gross on the front nine.

By remembering the good times we can set our sights on putting it all together on any given day.

I played the perfect round earlier this year at Bearwood Lakes...my first ever visit there in fact.
My mate Norman and I had been invited to play there by a member I had met via the Golf Magic site. Had never heard of the course before he mentioned it, but once I had visited the website and read a few reviews it really got me wanting to play there.
We arrived in time for a cup of coffee and a quick tour before we teed off. Norman and I took on Paul (the member) and his brother David who had also recently joined. Dave and Norman play off 9 and myself and Paul off 12 so it was, on paper at least, looking like a good match....and so it proved to be.
The match swung one way and then the other with all of us playing our part and hitting good shots. So good in fact that as we walked off the 9th green we had all scored 17 points, it was that close.
The banter was good, the weather was glorious. All was right with the world. The match continued in the same manner on the back 9. We stood on the 18th tee all square. I clearly remember thinking then that I didn't want to win this one. I certainly didn't want to lose but a halved match was on the cards and that's really the way I wanted it to end. But Norman had other ideas and made a fantastic birdie from a terrible lie out of the rough, hitting a wood into the heart of the green that a pro would have been proud of. So we took the money. But as I say, a half would have been a fair result and I felt a little sad that somebody had to lose that day. We all played superb golf, I had 37 points, Norman had 36 and Paul & Dave both finished with 35 it was that close in the end.
I've played Bearwood Lakes many times since, and I've scored better. But that day was special. A "once in a lifetime" day where everything was perfect and will never be topped.
The banter all day was good, the golf was superb, the weather was perfect, the course was in fantastic condition....it will never get better than that so it is my perfect round of golf.
