Just thought I'd share the news that I chipped in from off the green for the first time ever at the weekend, it's not going to make the breaking news bar on sky sports news but it made my day! Probably more by luck than judgement!

We only played the 9 hole par 3 a couple of times but it was also the first time I have come close to beating my mate (he nicked the last hole to tie!) and i hit my best ever score there. Overall I was pleased with it and even the weather went well for us!

Just need to beat him on the full course now...

Nice one, these smaller milestones are really important for us newbies.

I've read a fair amount of stuff that bangs on about visualising a shot. It's much more difficult to do when you've never played a shot like that. I remember after my first chip in, starting to believe I could chip in whenever I was on the fringe (which is half the battle).

Hope they're like busses for you and turn up in their droves.

T :D

Well done, it is amazing how these seemingly small things fire the enthusiasm and confidence.

One book advocates practicing chipping until you hole three shots in a session, but does say for average weekend golfers darkness and divorce proceeding would usually intervene. :D

Well done mate, hope it isn't too long until you do it again. If I practice chipping for an hour I usually hole 5-10 chip and runs, on the course I hole about 1 every 2 years :D

That sounds about right. When I first started out, I was absolutely lethal off the green. If I didn't chip in once in a round, I'd be annoyed. Now, I'm happy just to get up and down.

Well done. Believe it or not, I still remember when I holed my first proper chip from off the green...that was 20 years ago :p

Reading your post brought back happy memories!

I remember chipping in 3 times in a round once.. I can remember the holes 3rd, 15th, 16th and I can remember the distances.... 30ft, 120ft, 50ft. It was 15 years ago!!

Cheers guys.

Whilst we're on the subject of small milestones what were/are your other ones and have you achieved them yet?

I can think of 3 off the top of my head:

Par a hole - Done
Birdie a hole - Not done yet
Beat my mate - Not done yet

Obviously I'm not counting making par on a hole on the par 3 9 hole course... :D

Well done and keep going. Once this snow clears you'll soon tick the remainder of those milestones off. As a thought why not invest in a lesson at a range somewhere while the courses are shut so when you get out again you'll have a much better swing and can grind your mate into the mud

You chipped in from 120ft?? I'd be hitting a full wedge from there!! How far do you drive the ball - 1,000ft?? :D
