A little close for comfort!

My wife finally received her passport. Been pestering her for the last 3 years ever since she was refused a flight by Ryanair. She eventually applied for a British passport in March only to be told at the start of June that she wasn't actually a British Citizen.

Off to Dublin to make sure all the forms were correct to prevent delays and applied with only 15 working days left to get things processed. In the meantime she had a few trips down to check up on progress due to phones never being answered (this managed to speed thing up by a few days as it led to posting out an additional form 3 days before it would have been otherwise). During this she also had her car stolen in Dublin.

Final trip to Dublin today and collected it. A typically frustrating bureaucratic system but honestly the Irish passport process puts the British one to shame. Took them 3 months to inform her that she couldn't get a passport!

Got a little close for comfort because we are flying to Florida on Friday.

Maybe she'll listen to me in future.

I'm for renewal next year. With the weak Euro making the Irish passport significantly cheaper I may just switch

Were you not able to check the progress of the application online? I applied for my sons first passport on Friday and got a code to check on www.passport.ie Had a look today and it's saying due for issue on 17th July. 3 weeks, not bad.

I imagine it's a bit easier to manage passports for a country of around 4.5 million than one of 65 million and with around 200K new applications a year.

Yeah but it's not exactly very clear when the deadline to flight it fast approaching! The due for issue date on the system was also the 3rd same day as flight which wasn't exactly comforting :mmm:

Reassurance and communication via phone would have probably done the job but they aren't answering due to staff cuts :roll eyes:. Thank goodness she did keep the pressure on. They had input her name into the system incorrectly the first time she went down and as I say the additional form she had to complete was sent out sooner. It wouldn't have arrived until the 29th June at the earliest had she not been up and down. Think to get it turned around in under 3 weeks was decent going for a first time application.

Thank god it's over though. Was a very stressful couple of weeks and the car theft in the middle really helped thing settle :angry:.

Yeah but 12 weeks to receive the info that the application was rejected and this was after calling every week for updates since the end of April is slightly crazy despite the population. Mind you at least they could answer a phone!

I have to say that my dealings with the UK passport Office over last three months have been positive. My son lost his passport and my daughter's (child passport) was expiring whilst she'd be on holiday. So a replacement for my son and a new adult passport for my daughter. In both cases we made appointments at the London Passport office. Having got form filled and all other stuff with us our appointments took 15mins. In fact my daughter's 3weeks ago took less than that.

No complaints at all. I guess it's your circumstances that determine how difficult or complicated things are.

Irish one is brilliant Bob , Passport Express takes approx 10 working days , post office job , very efficent ..

They wont answer the phones , a civil servant go slow thingy
