I'm looking for somewhere me and three mates can play and stay next year for a day or two, we're looking at Sussex, preferably near Brighton as two of the four are wanting a night out too.

Any suggestions on where I should be looking?

This is my neck of the woods, and I am sure Smiffy will contribute as well.

If I had a couple of days I would try and get to East Sussex National GC for one day. They have two good courses set in a parkland layout and, in my opinion, are both worth playing. Probably about a 25min drive (or less) from Brighton.

For a different experience (and assuming hangovers on the 2nd day) I would play either East Brighton GC which has great views or Lewes GC which, although not the most attractive course, has some good holes and views of Sussex - although it can get pretty windy!

If you want to go further afield (within 1hrs drive of Brighton) you could try Crowborough Beacon (classic Sussex Heathland Course), Mannings Heath (Griffin, similar to Crowborough) or Copthorne GC.

The nearest true links is Rye but that is a fair journey and you need to contact the Secretary beforehand.

Hope you enjoy.

You could try my course, Hassocks Golf Club, 10 min. drive from Brighton.
It's a nice flat course, not too long, plenty of water, should be good if nursing a hangover! :)

Rye: handicap, which in all cases must not exceed 18 for men.

That's one course ruled out already!

I didn't think you could get on to Rye unless you were invited by a member????

If you want to play a really good links course then I recommend Littlestone, which is a couple of miles further on to Rye. Absolutely superb course, used as an Open qualifier, and always in great condition. Only problem with it is they only allow fourball play on Wednesdays, sticking to twoball or foursomes the rest of the week. Not a problem if you don't mind being split up into pairs though. Lewes is a good track, as is Cooden Beach in Bexhill. Not a true links in the purist sense of the term but a good course nonetheless. You can get on there fairly easily, and they take twoforeone vouchers too!
East Sussex National is worth a visit, not too far from Brighton. Worthing, (going the other way), has two nice courses as well apparantly. Never played them but have heard they are quite nice. Will put my thinking cap on over the next few days and see if I can come up with some other suggestions for you

Eastbourne Downs is cheap but a load better than the Brighton munis. Not links but it's on top of Beachy Head, so it's fair to say that the wind is important on most shots.

And there's enough hills to keep your fitness levels up.

Played it earlier this year and the greens were as good as any I've played on this year

Seaford is supposed to be very nice. I believe it was featured in the Mag earlier this year. Proper links course if I recall - it certainly looks out over the sea.

There are two courses in Seaford....
Seaford Head which is a municipal, not a bad course but I wouldn't call it a "proper" links.
Or there is a private course in Seaford called "Blatchinton". Much more linksy in it's turf and layout although not near the sea. That course is the better one of the two but it will cost you more to play it as it's a members course.
I prefer Blatchington to be honest...

Hi Clive, which are the "Brighton munis", that you referred to?

I forgot to mention in my earlier post about Hassocks, you won't find many greens better in this area, being sand based construction.

Presumably Waterhall and Hollingbury. Actually, Hollingbury has some fine holes, but the general upkeep of the course can sometimes let it down - nice greens though. It is also one of those courses where (literally) every man and his dog is out walking (and sometimes the local asbo dodgers).

Yeah, can't think of any others. I quite like Hollingbury, played there a few weeks ago. Years ago it used to be a championship course and I did hear that the council has sold it to a private buyer.

Another favourite around these parts is Singing Hills, 3 nine holes, The River, Lakes and Valley. Most people it seems, prefer River and Lakes, with the valley course being a bit drab.

It's at Albourne, 5-10 mins back up the A23 London bound.

Yup, them and Benfield Valley. Apparently it used to be a nice little 18 hole course, but since Sainsburys came along it's now only a little 9 holer with only 3 driver(ish) holes.

Just stopped off once for a quick 9 holer after work. Nice way to spend an hour and a half rather than doorknocking, but not really on a 'recommeded' list. :)

Used to go on a jolly down to Seaford. Nice track, decent dormy house to stay in and it howled a gale every time I went.

Would go there again - be careful if you hook off the first. One of our guys broke a window in a house left of the rough!

We used to play Singing Hills regularly with a Society I was a member of. Not a bad course but some of the "better" golfers got a little fed up with it after a few years and asked for somewhere a little more testing.
Out of the three loops, funnily enough I used to prefer the "Valley" nine. Don't know why.
The one thing I remember from there was the food!! Absolutely superb and the best nosh I have ever had on a Society do. The whole day was value for money though so if you are looking for somewhere a bit "cheaper" then this would be a good choice.

Spoff. One important question. How much are you looking to splash out on your week-end. Is it being done on a "budget" or are you looking to shell out for a great time on great courses???

Thanks all for the suggestions so far.

Smiffy, budget is still to be decided, in the last couple of years we have done Farthingstone, Northants that was all in 3 rounds B&B&evening meal for £100

£150 will probably be max for some of the guys.
