A fifth major...

I suppose so but it's still greater than Japan and other Asian countries. I suppose then going back to The main question then, I don't think any other countries deserve a major. The British and Americans have dominated the game throughout and still do. Maybe in time there will emerge a new golfing country such as Japan but only time will tell

Australia would be the most deserving in my opinion. Plenty of past major winners, and quite a few current top players, great courses, knowledgeable spectators, and not a bad climate.

The Open and the US Open stand alone in terms of their status as major events. The Augusta invitational farce played at the same overly manicured course (yes, they hand trim the bunkers with scissors!) for 70? years isn't worthy and the USPGA is a complete joke of a competition its fame is based around having the biggest feking silverware in the game.
The third major should be in Oz or SA and in a few years when they have a few of (or all??!) the worlds best, give the fourth to China.

Wouldn't mind there being 10 majors... anything to bring out a decent crowd! the European tour is DIRE!

There should be a couple more decent tournies in the middle of the Country every year... kinda Birmingham/Manchester way.

This week highlights the matter perfectly, a top event with a great format attendence however is dreadful. theres more people at my course on a saturday

no more majors as it will make it easier to try topple jacks record of 18 (some hope lol). he only had 4 to play in and thats the way it should stay. no change thank you!

Yeah I think that is the main argument against it, although i don't think anyone will break it even with six a year

What they could do is get rid of The Open Championship and replace it with The Players Championship.
Then the Americans could throw away their passports altogether ;)
'Golf's World Series' if you want

I personally think the majors should be the US open, the open then the Asian Open and a Masters that switches between August and a European course. There is a need for a slight US/Europe lean but Asia/Oceania does NEED a major, probably in China or Australia.

The current US bias comes from the way the world game was during the money years, the US had a big population with lots of people with money, many of those people played, gambled on or were involved in golf in some way.

Would keep the current four, but would favour the USPGA returning to matchplay, and add another major in Asia. Eventually even the US players will need to travel as the balance of the world economy (including the golf economy) is changing.

How about this idea from Johnny Vaughan in his new column in TG

" On a day mystically set by the lunar calender-First Thursday after the new moon in September St. Andrews plays host to a new Major "The Royal and Ancient" The Major Major. TO be invited to take part you have to have won a major or be one of 4 players deemed to have "played in a way befitting a game that is Royal and Ancient"
Not only will this underline St. Andrews' significance as the birthplace of the game but, by using the 4 Majors as qualifiers, put it on the pedestal it deserves to proudly occupy"

Now THAT is a good idea

A shame St Andrews is a relatively poor course...
?, I haven't played there but its in the top 3 of my to play before i die, i know that the winner of it will probably be at around -15 for four rounds but surely if they grew the rough a bit, lengthened it a tad it will be a hard test?
