Last Tuesday I played in the first round of the summer knockout, drawn against a 13 hcp so receiving 3 shots. Start was decent enough, missed a 4 footer for par on the first but apart from that everything was ok and turned at all square. 4 pars, 4 bogeys and a double.

Back 9 was better, seemed to be hitting fairways and the greens on the par 3's, was 3 up after 14 and closed it out on the 16th for a 3 and 2 win.

Met up on wednesday with my partner for Sunday's foursome match, never met him before so we decided to have a practice round, played two balls of each tee and alternate shots with each to get my head around the 4some format. Went OK, drove well but putted poorly. We got one of the balls round in 14 over the card, (16hcp and 18hcp), so that decided the question about odd/even tee shots for sunday.

Practice round on Friday with a mate, gave him 9 shots. Again drove well, putting was better and chipping was ok. Shot 85 and won 2up.

Sunday came around and the Jock Stewart (Cambs Golf Union comp) 4some match against Cambridge Meridian. Played against a 16 and 19 hcp pairing, both nice blokes and had a laugh on the way round.

Hit the long-awaited first tee shot down the first (I had the odd holes), solid enough, about 240 in the fairway. Partner then shanked an 8 iron OOB, my subsequent 9 iron just rolled off the right edge, but following a chip by my partner I rammed in a 12 footer for a nervy half following a 3putt from pour opponents.

We then lost the 2nd, 3rd and 4th to pars to go 3 down after 4. At this point my parter told me he really doesn't like playing in the mornings, (wee teed off at 1030) as he's a morning person and likes to play in the afternoons when he has woken up!!!

However, we managed to win the 5th and 6th with pars, halved 7 with a bogey to be 1 down.

My second shot found the trees on 8 (par 5) with our opponents just short of the green. Found our ball, partner chipped it out backwards to leave me 169yards, managed to find the back fringe of the green for 4.

Opponents overheat the chip then three putted, my partner knocked a lovely chip to 4 feet which I holed for a valuable half.

Hit the green on the par 3 9th, 20ft or so left. Oppo's found the front bunker. They found the back of the green from the bunker, then 3 putted. My partner knocked a great putt down to 2 foot, which was conceded, so we turned all square.

We then made par on 10 to go 1up, won the 11th without reaching the green when oppo's found sand of the tee, chipped out, then lost it in the bushes left of the green. I'd hit a good drive, partner found the front fringe and we moved to the 12th 2up.

12 is a longish par 4, both balls found the fairway. Oppo's played first and pulled a 3wood left into trees with no choice but to chip out sideways. I played it safe and hit an 8iron short of the cross bunker, leaving my partner 120 the green. Oppo's chipped out then missed the green left for 4. Partner found the front right portion. A decent chip to 5 feet and a putt holed by my partner extended our lead to 3.

Halved the par 3 13th, then won the par 5 14th with a par. Dormie 4.

A decent drive on 15 followed by a good second and a chip/putt/putt finish meant we shook hands with a half in 5, to win my first match for my new club.

We also won the match overall 2-1 to progress to the next round. Really enjoyed the format and the competitive element of representing the club. Looking forward to doing it all again in a few weeks time.

Cheers, me too.

Got a practice round tomorrow evening then the first round of the 4BBB knockout on Friday, and then Club Medal on Saturday, my first qualifier of the season. Got a H4H handicap challenge to think about so need to get started on getting the handicap down!!!
