I don't know if this has been done before but here we go for a minor rant.

My personal favourite irons manufacturer has just released two sets of irons both of which are advertised for sale as a set of 7 clubs which is most of a full set just without the 3 iron, the 3 iron being available but you have to ask and pay for it, so far so good this is the current fashion. But.......

Did anybody think when they bought a new set of 7 irons that the price was 7/8ths of what it was when they bought their previous set of 8 irons? I'm guessing not, in fact from what I can see the price is as near as damn it exactly the same. Are we, the consumer, getting shafted (pun intended) yet again?

Yes and no.

Cost of raw materials and manufacturing have all gone up over recent years. This is a senisble way to keep inital price point the same. A bit like decreasing the size of a bag of crisps or a chocolate bar. Yes we do get less value for money but aren't being met with a massive forced price hike at the same time. With many (not all) golfers substituting 3i and even 4i with hybrids it isn't really a great loss to the consumer either. At least the options remains to be able get the iron.

Manufactures need to make thier money within the first 6-12 months of a set being launched so prices do seem to be inflated. The answer though is simple. Buy a previous years model, save a fortune and still get your hands on a great club and a fraction of the original RRP.

Early adopters of anything are always shafted regardless of the product.
