54 hole medal tied scores

My club has recently finished its annual medal summer comp.

best 3 rounds from 6 ended in 2 players tied on 218 nett.


player A has rounds of 67-77- 74 on last round of 6.


player B has rounds of 71-73-74 on last round of 6.


only day both players play same time is round 6.

The club did not have any rules in place to decide the winner if the tournament was tied.

Who should be declared the winner and why ?

But if both final round of 74 were on the same day then the "fairest" way could be countback on that round. Even though that effectively turn a 54 hole comp into a normal 18.

whilst I agree the :thup: it's neither fair to retrospectively decide any basis nor within the rules to decide a strokeplay event with a matchplay decider.

We use an 18 hole strokeplay playoff to decide if its a tie for a 'major' trophy. Best way forward.

To not have taken the possibility of a tie into consideration us unbelievable. Surely there must have been a tie at some stage in the past ? If so, what did they do then ?

In respect of the event as played so far, the only option is to declare it a tie.

If this is unacceptable then there are various options available but they need to be stroke play based (33/6) assuming no-one want's to decide it by lot.

My personal recomendation would be an 18 hole medal play-off with the committee providing lunch, with wine, for both players in addition to the underlying 'prizes'!

Why not forget the playoff, split the prizes and just head off for the lunch and wine?

same as us any "board comp" that is tied equal sweep money and play off arranged. Totally agree its very Strange there is no rules for equal score in OP.

So they ended up giving it to Player A on the basis of his lowest nett round of 67 earlier in the competition.....at least they have a rule in place for the future, but I wouldn't be a happy player B!

This is the explanation posted on the clubs website, they have added the rule for a tie to next years comp and applied the new rule retrospectively to this years comp, have they acted correctly.

Player A won as a virtue of having the lowest Nett round.


From this year and moving forward the committee has decided that this is how this competition will be decided in the event of a tie. If both players have the same score it will go to the next score. In the event that the three scores are identical count back on the best round will take place.


I hope this clarifies the situation.

I would be livid if I were player B!!! Player A also shot the highest nett score and showed the least consistency! Very very very poor call by the club in my opinion. Even next year that would be unfair.

The following would have been fairer in my eyes.

Count back on the 74's.

Any form of play off probably easiest to have a sudden death type.

Best gross.

Getting an Octopus to pick.

Seeing which player could put the most golf balls in his mouth.

Must say it's very open and honest of them to admit they had no rule!!

We have used both Club 2000 and HandicapMaster software and AFAIK the default placing for these "best of" competitions is as the committee have ruled (lowest nett score, next lwest if equal etc). So I would say the "right" player has been declared the winner and wouldn't be too upset if I was player B tbh.
