hi
what do you think is better to have in your bag, a 5 wood , usually 18* , or a 3 hybrid/rescue which are 19* . I have been looking at a 5 wood for a few weeks because my irons are 5-pw and i have a 4 hybrid , but i now dont no whether a 3 hybrid or a 5 wood , which are easier to hit off the floor etc.help would be appreciated :D

I have 16 and 19 degree hybrids,as i have never got on with a 5 Wood.My swing is fairly steep which suits hybrids, and they are great out of rough, and as i have just found out even heather at times.

I have played for years and was never concerned about the 14 club maximum. Now with hybrids, gap wedges, i could do with 15 clubs !

I switch between the 19 degree hybrid and 3 iron depending how well i am swinging, and the course i am playing.

I carry both a 5 wood and a 3 hybrid. My 5 wood goes about 20 yards further than my hybrid and means I can get home at the first and 17th as well as having a go at the 2nd if I hit a good drive

I didn't know "3" rescues were 19 degrees, you learn something every day. :D :D

I carry both, but if I had a 4 rescue (which I wouldn't t.b.h.) I'd go with the 5 wood.

Surely from a purely utilitarian point of view though, a rescue is going to be easier to hit (albeit shorter).

Go on....I'm intrigued....

Neither really.
17 degree 4 wood takes care of the fairway wood dept
20.5 degree 3h and 23 degree 4h take care of the long irons.
Got about 20 yards between each club and then about 20 to the 5 iron. If I'm 200 yards out I'm unlikely to hit the green that often even with another long club.

It depends on what you would use most and how you would use it. I have a 3 wood that I used to struggle with off the deck and so I got a 4hybrid. I could use it off a tee but i dont that often.

I now only use the 3 wood for tighter holes (oooh errr) and the hybrid for the 200 yard approaches.

If you are a higher handicapper I would say the hybrid would be the better club, more versatile and will therefore probably get more use than a 5 wood.

It could come down to confidence and feel, try a few out on the range or even better on a course for a few holes if the pro will let you take a couple out for a try.

It could also come down to your longer term plans for your set. Do you plan to buy a 3 wood overtime too? You don't want to buy a club only for it to become obsolete in a few months.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Ever since I changed from a 5 wood to a 20° my long fairway shots have improved immeasurably so for me it's the Hybrid every time. :D
This is a very interesting post.....from a similar h'cap player to myself.
There must be 4 or 5 occasions during a game where I take the 3 hybrid over the 5 wood (I have both) because I don't really need the extra distance. 2nd shots on par 5s spring to mind...I'd rather have 110 (PW) left to go, and be in the right place, than 90-95 (GW) in the light rough or the wrong side of the fairway.
I would drop the 5 wood if I didn't use it on 2 or 3 tees.

My hybrid is 19deg, and I was told it was a "2".

When I was fitted the hybrid was smack in the middle (yardage wise) of the 3 wood and 3 iron, and the 5 wood was only 5 yds shorter than the 3 wood :D so I went with the hybrid.

I've only ever hit one shot with it that went exactly where I intended it to... 220yds out on the par 5 7th (?) at St. Mellion, landed it on the green and it stayed there. Shame it was my 4th shot :o
