5 Club Competition

I am with Freddie on this one. 5 clubs is way too easy, and so is pointless. I often only carry 7 in a pencil bag anyway.

3 clubs including putter is more fun for this sort of format.

I'd agree if it was off the yellows but off the whites, it wouldn't be much fun with 3 clubs.

I played in one some years ago and at 6800 yards it just wasn't enjoyable. 3 wood, 3 wood, pitch/chip, putt, putt.

And that was just the par 3s! :o

playing in a 3 club and putter comp tomorrow. think it will be driver,5iron and 9iron. be interesting to see if scores are much different from normal.

After a fairly indifferent practice round today, I have now settled on my 5 clubs.

I tried my hybrid on all of the relevant par 3s and it went ok with a bit of choking down the grip where necessary. I will probably take an 8 iron. Although, I may have to rethink on the morning depending on the wind.

Driver is definitely in. I'm just so much more consistent with it than my 3 wood. Incidentally, whilst messing around today, I also discovered I could hit my driver quite nicely off the deck. Bit of a fade but a steady 220 yards. May come in handy if things get desperate!

So the final bag (subject to weather):

Driver
Hybrid
8 iron
51 degree wedge
Putter

Thanks to everyone for their contributions. I was deadset on a 5 iron but the force of argument and good sense made me try out my hybrid with pleasing results. :)

Ours was 3 clubs plus putter but played off the ladies tees :o

25 of the 70 entries scored 40pts or more.

I'd be geeky about it and write down the yardage of every hole, then take off the distance I'd normally hit my driver, and see what club best suits the most common distance left, then add a wedge for bunkers and pitches.
