40th Birthday Trip.... Help please!

Hello everyone, I’m hoping that with lockdown stopping most people getting on the course I might ask for some help please?!

It’s my 40th next year (gawd), every year me and a group of lads go to Portugal/Spain for a 3 day/4 round golf trip. Plenty of drinking at night and a decent standard of golf during the day as we are all single figure handicappers. Normally costs us just under £500 all in plus food/drink.

Given next year is a big birthday we were thinking of a special trip to replace the normal one.... the problem is the world is literally our oyster (for now let’s just hope/assume covid isn’t an issue)

The budget can be more (maybe up £1000-£1300) but not just to spend it for the sake of it. Trying to create a great trip.

The criteria is:
*Must be 4-7 nights with 4-5 rounds within that to allow for travel
*Must have some nightlife close by, I’m not saying we want Ibiza/Vegas but can’t be hotel bar every night either.
*Ideally play at least 1 iconic course during the trip and then some other ‘decent’ ones.

Problem is I’m being blinded by the wealth of options. I’ve looked at Florida to take in TPC sawgrass and others (but what others). Then Myrtle beach but ended up being blinded by streamstrong, copperhead, doral etc. The problem is there’s so many courses I’m worried we end up paying well over the odds when we could play lesser known but still quality courses!

Then there’s Dubai with European tour type earth courses but not sure on the night life.

Alternatively could stay uk based and try to play St. Andrews and/or Carnoustie with a couple of cheaper courses to make up the numbers. If we stayed uk by taking out the flights we would likely save £400pp.

Or even Ireland?!

As you can tell I’m all over the place and basically asking; has anyone done or have ideas on a great lads trip that isn’t too expensive to put people off but one to remember over and above the usual lads trip round albufeira/Alicante type trip!

Yours in hope
Terry

If you choose Florida - you don't necessarily need to look at the top name courses who usually want a top name price.

Tracks to consider IMO

World Woods - 2 x Tom Fazio designed courses. Regularly feature in "Top 100" lists
Orange County National - again 2 x 18 holes. Formally host to USPGA Tour Q School
Grand Cypress Resort - 27 holes. Regular stop on the LPGA Tour
Bella Colina - Nick Faldo design
Mission Inn - another 36 hole facility

Literally 100's of other courses to suit any budget

Here is another suggestion, if you are looking for something different you can try South Africa. For around £1300 you can have a safari and golf thrown in. Stay at Sun City near the Pilanesburg national park and then fly down to George and spend a few days down there playing golf. I have put a link to some of the courses which are great to play, and all memorable.

Can only be 1 place to go - BOGNOR. Sunniest place in uk. 3 great courses very close to town centre. Be careful of the windmill hole on the sea front course as it can ruin a good round. As can the hippos mouth hole on the park course. Nightclub and Sports bar on the pier with a few bars dotted around.
No time difference or wasted money on flights. Plenty of in party battles to be had in the various amusement arcades. Party party party By staying at Butlins. You know it makes sense ?

Myrtle Beach is one of the great golf destinations but you can't do it within budget. I've been 6 or 7 times and it costs around £2k for flights, hotel, car and golf. You also need to eat/drink.

Then there is the PGA superstore. You will not see another golf shop like it anywhere on the planet. Actually you will, 10 miles up the road as there are 2 of them! That requires a bundle of cash too ?

You could just about do Ireland on your budget as long as you stay away from Dublin and the SW region. Donegal/Sligo offers the best VFM along with some stunning courses.

Thanks everyone so far this is exactly what I was after (maybe apart from the Bognor idea isn’t my favourite ?)

Thanks Fader for a list of Florida courses, you have confirmed what I was thinking that we don’t have to pay £300 a round for top courses when there’s loads of courses we would consider to be very good anyway!

South Africa and Turkey my worry would be the nightlife. We are not very cultured to be fair, if Wakefield and Scunthorpe had good courses and nice weather I wouldn’t be posting asking for advice.... ?

Please keep em coming. Ideally if you know of courses that we should be looking at. For Ireland are there courses we should look at?

Thanks all; ideas are really welcome!

Years ago Majorca would've double ticked all your boxes. But seemingly it's went downhill a bit and not so great now.

Try Tenerife, a few excellent courses, I think there's now two 5 star courses plus there's the quirky La Gomera Island course good for a day or over night away.
Entertainment wise there's Las Americas and Los Cristianos :D.
Cheap booze, almost guaranteed excellent weather, everything you could wish for(y)(y)(y)
wish I could go.

Liverpool sounds ideal as a base

thanks for this.... do you or anyone else know anything about these courses? Seem to be about £70-£100 a round:

King and Bear
Slammer and Squire
Falcons Fire
Shingle creek
Hawks Landing
Celebration

Also; do you get better value to book your flights yourself, accommodation as a villa/Airbnb and then tee times indivudally? Or is it better to do stay and play packages or leave it all to someone like your golf travel.

Book it yourself. Use Expedia or ebookers to book flughts/hotel/car as a package. Use the last minute websites to book your tee times up to a week or so in advance to get the best deals.

Edit: my advice is based on a trip to the USA

King and Bear - not played
Slammer and Squire - not played
Falcons Fire - not one of my favourites and does not drain well
Shingle creek - good but going downhill
Hawks Landing - average and going downhill
Celebration - nice but this drains poorly

We have always gone DIY. Cheapest flights we could find. Book a villa direct. Sort the golf when we get there - more often than not via golfnow.com Often crazy prices if you can stand the midday heat.

World Woods is exceptional - you can usually get a 36 hole deal for less than $150

Others to consider in the next price bracket down:

Southern Dunes - my favourite when combining quality and price - you can also eat at the famous Manny's Chophouse just down the road!!
Providence (believe they recently relaid their greens)
St. Cloud 27 holes links style
Championsgate Country Club - great layout but a bit rustic for clubhouse / dining facilities
Redtail

And a few to avoid

Any of the Disney Courses - overpriced and not that great
Championsgate (not to be confused with Championsgate Country Club)
Orange Lake complex
Remington
Ridgewood Lakes
Mystic Dunes

All personal opinions of course!!
