300 yard driving

Played with a few mates today one of which coaches hockey - and another big hitter, they managed several 300yard + drives - including hitting a par 4 green from the yellows 305m away (330yards approx) and I was shocked a how long 300yards really is.
One par 3 I hit 3iron (185m and into wind) and one of the lads hit 5 iron - It really is a different game for them - however, I still managed to half the match by hitting fairways and good wedge work.

And to prove that golf is more than big driving - the par 4 that they hit the green -I hit a good drive, good wedge and 2 putts for par - they managed to hit the green and 3 putt for a half. Next tee box I asked them if they could do the same again and they both managed to snap hook into the trees while I bumped it up the middle safe bogie and hole won

i agree with the above...
last year i played off 20 i hit my driver on average 280 sometimes as much as 300 with a solid strike.
i now play of 15 i average 250 off the tee but my ball is often kept in play. my good rounds are down to 2 areas of my golf and its always if i played my wedges well and if my putting was on form.

it took a number of rounds with a man who has 35 plus years on me hitting a ball no more then 200yrds and always coming in around 18 over to learn there is more then booming the ball somewhere towards the hole and hoping for the best!!!! your margin for error gets smaller and smaller the longer the ball travels. play ther percantages keep your ball in play

I aswell think that it's far better to keep it on the fairway to hit it 300 yards but in the deep stuff, take that hole that your mates drove, I.m.o. On the green in 2 and a 2 putt is much better than on in 1 and 3 putting... Course if you can hit it 300 yards and keep it in play most of the time then go for it!

I shocked myself over the last 3 weeks,
I have hit a 310 yard drive, 305yd and yesterday a 320! !!! All were on rock fairways so lots of roll but it feels good to hit that far!!!

This ^ is entity correct you can havethe best short game in the world but if you are hacking oh the crap on every second shot it won't matter. Yo need a solid long game as well as a great short game IMO.

A 300 yard shot is normally the cumulative result of my first two blows. I can understand the joy of being able to pull a 300 yarder out of the bag especially if it goes where it's intended but how many of the really long hitters are in the top % for accuracy. I'd prefer to become more consistent with my powderpuff 240 (260 max - downwind) drives and find the greens more often with my second than blast one and either chop out or reload. Maybe its a latent jealousy of those that can!

I heard last night on the US golf that Dustin Johnson lead the driving distance and fairways hit. They thought it was the first time it had happened in a tournament. From what I was watching the fairways didn't seem that wide, and they had a bit of run. Despite this he was well down the leaderboard.
