3 clubs and a putter

3 clubs + putter ........ Driver, 7i, gap wedge, putter

3 clubs.......hybrid, 7i, putter

Wish we did this comp. Sounds fun and easier on the shoulders :)

Last time I used a 5-wood for tee shots and long shots from the fairways and semi-rough, a 7-iron, and a 50 degree Gap Wedge. Didn't win, but got a respectable score.

I won my clubs 3 club challenge last (this) year, took my 4w for off the tee and fairway, 8 iron which was ok for the par 3's, bump & runs and bunkers and took my putter, so 1 less club than the OP's allowance but pished it with a nett 68, 5 under par 😜😂👍🏌

They've change our format for this years comp being held tomorrow, it's now as per the OP and has become '3 clubs and a putter', so, being the holder of last years 3-club comp I want to put in a good defence.

I've toyed with just adding a gap wedge to last years set-up so I'd have;

4w (good off the tee & off the deck)
8i (can't reach too much trouble on par 4's and good for par 3's also)
52* (good around the green and in case I catch a trap)
Putter.

I wouldn't argue with that selection. I think 3 plus a putter makes it too easy. My old club used to do a 3 club challenge, no plus putter. The odd person would use a wedge to putt with but most went two clubs plus a putter. That made you far more creative with your shots, club selection was far more agonising.

Sunday is our 5 club challenge.

For me me I can't really see the challenge. That doesn't mean I expect 40 points. Just that it lets you cover most eventualities.

Gonna go Driver, 4 hybrid, 8 iron and 54 degree. Plus putter. The extra club just means driver goes in instead of the 3 hybrid (with no 4).

First time I ever broke 80 was in a three club comp - shot gross 78 (net 57) with a five wood, eight iron and a putter - and finished second to a 20 handicapper who had a gross 76 with a Taylor Made driver, a wedge and putter.

Not sure what I'd use with that extra club - maybe adds too much choice

Played in our 3 club last year. 3 Hybrid 7i and putter. 39 points and the best bunker shot I have ever played up against the lip with a 7i. Opened the face right up got as low as I could and played the shot more like a baseball swing. Ball popped up lovely and pulled up about 6 inches from the pin.
