3 Club Challenge

I've got our annual 3 club challenge this Sunday, I'm going with my 3w, 8 iron & putter.

We have 5 par 3's on our course which in the summer are usually well out of range of an 8 iron but with winter tee's and their may be the odd winter green on 1 or 2, I should make 4 out of 5 of them with an 8 iron so I've based my choice on that along with being able to chip from around the greens with it and it being a good approach club to the green.

I drive with my 3w anyway so that's a given, but I can also use it off the fairway on the longer par 4 & 5's and then 1 or a couple of 8 irons.

Taking the putter speaks and picks itself personally, I'm not one of these that will use a wood, hybrid or iron to put.

What would be your 3 clubs and why?

5 iron, pw,putter.
I'm long enough with a 5 iron to reach most if not all par 5's in 3, I can open the face a take a lot off if needed for that par 3 or maybe smash a pw as far as possible if a 5 is to long.

I would take the clubs that allow you to hit most of the par 3s and a distance club.

Knowing you can only use 3 clubs makes you think about the course and your game before you even get there!

Sounds like an interesting challenge to brighten up golf at a miserable time of year - clearly not working for everyone though

In a way I'm with Craw here.

It's amazing how many people score really well when they play these 3 or 4 club comps, say that it's the way forward as you have to become a "shotmaker" and then revert to the full 14 at the earliest opportunity......

Its just a bit of fun , winter golf thing i say otherwise foursomes , texas scramble , greensomes be pointless in a way and we all be shopping and not playing golf :smirk:

At my club we have a 3 clubs AND a putter comp on a Friday night when we play a 9 hole cross country (1st tee - 17th green etc)
Followed by pie and peas and presentation - a well supported one off bit of fun. (3w, 6i,pw and putter for me !)

Any 4 clubs
4 clubs but one must be a putter.
If you are bored with winter golf, what with mats and temp tees, it can be a bit of a change.

The one I wouldn't play in is 3 clubs and one must be a putter.
Why not let the golfers have a long club, a medium club a short club and a putter....at least give them a chance to play some reasonable golf shots.
