I can see that to get a h/cap, you need to put 3 cards in. From these 3 cards they discard the two worst (why?), and take the best. They then get rid of the sillys, and that's your number.

Whilst I can't suggest anything better, this does seem flawed. Some one who puts in one flash round would be artificially low. Some one who puts in 3 gash cards (with nothing more than doubles) would be high.

From my last 3 rounds, I'd be off 3 instead of 10 (may be 9, waiting on HDID), as my rounds were 76, 78, 75. But there is no standard scratch for a first h/cap card. I am no way a 3 handicap.

My friend Chang, who I played with on the Friday, and who was behind my group on Saturday, shot 78, 74 and 73 on the three days. He was off 11, but this would give him a handicap of 1. That's some drop. He's good, but not that good.

For both of us, it would take a lot of 0.1s to correct this.

Even for the higher h/caps, because of reducing the disasters on the card, they get a lower h/cap than they would want, and struggle to play to it. If you routinely have a 10 on the card, you are never going to score well in stroke play.

To me, more cards need to be considered, or may be a review for new h/caps after a 3 month period, or the first 6 cards after a first h/cap to establish if the initial number given was correct.

Without accusing him of having a handicap that is artificially low (although he has been rather easy to beat the last few times i played him ) this is exactly what happened with J_F when he put his cards in. Everybody can have one flash round once in a while and this could result in false handicap, although in J_F's case it was more a case of 2 bad rounds. Not sure of better way myself, maybe more cards required but this may put some people off getting a handicap.

I put 3 cards in which were 22, 23 and 23 above CSS and got a handicap of 12 when i returned to the game 5 years ago so that proves that there is no real strict formula for working it out. I had been playing of 6 when i stopped 10 years earlier so the handicap sec said it was a very difficult one to call

There is the opportunity for adjustment at the annual review but you may have had a lot of .1's by then.

Yeah, as Stuart (so kindly, cheers pal) said, this is exactly what happened to me when I joined my new course. A 75 mixed in with a 89 & a 93. So, I'm off 6 now.

Admittedly the two duff rounds were in wind & weather you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy but I was still kinda surprised to get chopped 3 full shots on what I had been playing off before at my previous club. (Mind you, I did have an 8 on my scorecard for the 75. A par would have had me off 4! Thank God I'm not)

On the other hand my average score was 85.6, which around my new course would have led to a handicap of 17 and I'd be taking money off Stuart for the rest of time!

There has to be a better system, though.

P.S. Stuart, I did come 2nd in my first medal off the new handicap. :D :D

This explains why my dad and I are both 22 handicaps!!!!

I handed in 3 cards of 93 93 and 94 where as my dad handed in 107 102 and 93. I'm clearly 4 shots minimum better than my dad :D

My first 3 rounds where actually 101, 90, 79 (after dropping 11 shots per round I expected a 68 - It never appeared :() and although I played with members, we were not in a comp so completely forgot about siging the cards.

When I handed these 3 in they were declined due to not being signed but now I know they take the lowest I'm so glad as I'm no way an 8 handicap.

As you say, that's a hell of a lot of .1's to bring me up to scratch.

I thought they took an average over the 3 cards, thats the point of 3 of them right?

No, it is definitely the best of the three. My limited experience was that the handicap secretary will take a view over the three cards otherwise I'd have started last season off 10!

Keep playing like that and we'll be getting you a sombrero!

Do 'loud mouth' do sombrero's?
