28 max handicap

Out of curiosity, does anyone know why 28 is the UK maximum handicap? Surely 27 makes more sense.

Not sure why it would make more sense, could just use any arbitrary number once we shy away from multiples of 18 imo.

Can get club handicaps up to 54 now as well, they're just not applicable away from the home club

Or, if you were a cynic, none of it makes any sense. Why would 27 make more sense?

36 is the max handicap for women which is 2x the number of holes. 54 for kids is 3x. Well, 27 is 1.5x the number of holes, surely that's a more logical multiplier than 1.555555x ?

Or you could say that a 28 handicap gives you 2 shots on the first double-digit Stroke Index. Is that any less logical? I don't see much logic in any of this.

I'd always assumed it was for a "normal" par 72 course - a handicap of 28 makes a nice round 100.

You've got to break 100 was the mantra I learnt before I got a handicap.
