Following on from last years thread , the start of the season marks the start of clubs annual knockout competitions, be it singles, foursomes and fourballs, club or county.

Come and regale tales of hero shots, duffed chips, awful chat and questionable interpretations of rules......

Going first, I played the first round of summer singles at my new club first thing on friday morning. I was against at older guy (id guess mid 60s) who i was giving 6 shots to (8.2 vs 13.5). I think he had been a good player in the past but age/health had caught up with him over recent years, though he was still a big hitter for his age. White tees , 6500 yrds, par 71.

Hole 1 - 427yrd par 4 - tough opening hole, shot hole. OOD left, trees right, in to a stiff breeze. Even though im in the fairway bunker off the tee, i make a solid 5, he cant get on the green in 3, makes 6, so halved.
Hole 2 - 383yrd par 4 - im about 4ft away in 3, he was a fair way back with his drive, scrambles about a bit - he misses a 6ft putt for a 5, we walk off. 1UP
Hole 3 - 368yrd par 4 - after a lovely 3 wood off the tee, i make a regulation par. his second shot left him a very long putt, so another 6footer for par which he misses again. 2UP
Hole 4 - 543yrd par 5 - shot hole - after a good drive, i get too clever with my second and put myself in a terrible position for my third, miss green, then lip out with a par putt for 6. He had hacked it about too from in the trees with his second shot, but hit a great shot from 100 yrds to about 5ft which he holes to make a 6 too, but net 5 - 1UP.
Hole 5 - 203yrd par 3 - pin right at back so playing 220, water left. Wind slightly helping. We both hit decent tee shots but both have LONG putt. He putts his to about 5ft, I knock mine dead. He misses again - back to 2UP
Hole 6 - 356yrd par 4 - neither of us play it very well - halved in 5s - 2UP
Hole 7 - 154yrd par 3 - both hit the green but still have decent putts. I put mine to a few inches, he leaves himself another 5-6 footer - and misses - 3UP
Hole 8 - 379yrd par 4 - he makes a mess of his chipping and end up with a 6. I somehow flew the green with my second and plugged badly in the bunker which i can only just get out to the lip - but hit a good chip and putt to make a 5. 4UP
Hole 9 - 511yrd par 5 - shot hole, all uphill. Hit a beaut of a drive, an average 2nd but then top my 3rd in to greenside bunker, then hit my bunker shot thin way off the back of the green. Hit a great chip off the back and make the putt for 6. He hacks it about a bit too but makes a 6 as well so wins 3UP
Hole 10 - 144yrd par 3 - he hits an awful tee shot then puts in the bunker. Despite thinning my tee shot I make a regulation par. He doesnt get up and down so back to 4UP
Hole 11 - 423yrd par 4 - shot hole. I hit a bomb, leaving me an 8 iron in, and make a regulation par after a tricky first putt. He hits a terrible drive, has to hack out but has two putts for half - he misses his bogey putt - 5UP
Hole 12 - 550yrd par 5 - shot hole. He makes a regulation 6. I thin my third long of the green and cant get up and down for 5, so his hole - back to 4UP
Hole 13 - 510yrd par 5 - after a poor second and third shots, I make worldie chip to get up and down for 5, he only makes 6, and im back to 5UP dormie
Hole 14 - 181yrd par 3 - we both make solid pars (his first par) - 5 and 4 win for me! (we actually didnt realise id won here , we both made 5s on the 15th and then realised it was already over)

For the whole round I shot 81 (doubled the 17th) - so thats +10 and my handicap, so quite happy.
So very solid start to my new club singles campaign. Im against a guy who i actually played with in another comp in the next round - just one shot in that tie, and I know he is a very good putter!

Draws aren't made until next month but I've entered three this year.
1. The men's four-ball (big event where people can bid for the teams in an auction as well).
2. Men's singles for handicaps of 8 to 18 only.
3. Mixed foursomes which we got to the final in two years ago.

Last year my performance in the various matchplays was shocking so lots of improvement needed this time.

Friday gone… 1st round of scratch KO playing a 4hcapr…but of course no shots given by him to me as a scratch comp.

With short game working xlnt I had two putts from 10ft on 14th to go 3 up…of course I three putt 🙄

He wins 15 and 16. So from verge of me being 3 up with 4 to play…we are on 17th tee all square. After our tee and 2nd shots he’s in green side bunker in tough place and I’m 10yds short of green. I chip stone dead…he takes two to get out of bunker and I win hole.

So I’m 1up playing Par 5 18th - sees him in greenside bunker in 3 - my 3rd is fired to centre of the green. His bunker shot goes long…and putting first his 5th misses. I putt stone dead. Match over.

Pleasing - a great scalp.

Not entered club ones, but will be representing club with a partner in the County Seniors Foursomes Knockout.

To get in the club scratch knockout, I will have to finish in top 8 in the club championship. Reached semi-final last year.

Sounds like your opponent needs to get himself in the practice bunker. :)

Didn't think i'd be posting in this thread 2 bairns and can't be bothered with the admin for the single knockouts. Only shot of knockout golf was through the 4BBB qualifier on sat. top 32 go through to the knockouts

we finished 35th with 38 points

just got an email saying 3 of the teams that finished above didn't meet the requirements (3 scores submitted in the last year)

so we sneak through... buzzing favourite comp of the year

Giving 17 strokes to each of our oppos (and 6 to my partner) in the 4BBB summer knockout yesterday, we went 1 up with a birdie on 17 and then got up & down from the greenside bunker, holing a slippery 5 footer for par, on the 18th to chalk up another victory for the low handicappers.
Will be giving 14 and 15 strokes in the next round (subject to any handicap changes).

Sounds like a good match and the handicaps were correct.
Nice one to win 👍

Just played one so far, that was in an interclub mixed competition, we lost on the 19th after a handicap mix up where we were told we were giving 3 shots when in fact we should have been getting 4, we had already played 2 shot holes before an innocent question by me revealed the error.

Doubles match today giving 7 shots to my partner and 6 and 13 to our opponents.

My partner got a phone call on the first green saying his dad’s dog (who he is dog watching) was bleeding from the mouth and wouldn’t stop so he had to go take him to the vets.

I played like a wally for the next 8 holes and conceded the match on the 9th so the 3 of us had a short trip to the bar.

How do you make such a mistake? I can sort of understand the odd shot, getting 3 instead of 4 for example, but thinking you were giving shots when you should be getting them is just crazy.

it was in an mixed interclub match so out the team captains got together to work out the handicaps, it was only when I happened to ask the woman of the other pair what her handicap was that we realised something was wrong. our captain had used another pairs handicaps instead of our own and hadn't put the individual handicaps on the card, he had just written, giving 3 on our card. I will definitely be checking in future.

My confusion with this is why are the Captains left to do that, trusted to get it right and taken as fact. I’ve never played a single match where I’ve not personally asked my opponents handicap, worked out the shots and agreed it with them verbally on the first tee.

Absolutely right of you to be checking every time from now on

I would always check before a match, and if I didn’t know the holes that shots were given take a scorecard with me as well just to be sure.
I played a guy once in a team match play who explained to me beforehand it was his first match and he got called up in the morning as someone had dropped out and could I help him if he needed it.
First hole I rolled a putt up dead but he didn’t concede it.
On the 2nd tee he said was that 4 for 2 points?
Nobody had actually told him it was match play 😂.
He couldn’t apologise enough for not conceding the putt, I did feel sorry for him.
