2018

Time to lighten this discussion:

Sepp Blatter was asked "Who is your favourite Qatar player?"

He replied "Eric Clapton!"

Still not as funny as England not getting 2018 though.

My final take on the subject...........

Shamelessly stolen from elsewhere, here is one Englishman' take on the whole thing....It pretty much sums it up perfectly.

Excellent. Now we can look forward to a few years of petulant bleating by the gutter press about how we were cheated, oblivious to a central tenet of the “fair play” so heartily cited, which prohibits whining like a spoilt schoolgirl when you lose.

Corruption will be universally cited and shouted from the rooftops and any other reason (including, but not limited to, the UK gutter press’ perpetual and vomit-stained bipolarity regarding football) will be brushed under the carpet. We’re gonna need a bigger carpet...

The English presentation seemed to be based on the Premier League being super dooper, some vague nonsense about that Mancunian guy's youth scheme, Beckham's shameful sob story, the Prince's wedding and not a lot else. Also thought the music was extremely dreary. Even if it was the best presentation, these things are merely for summing up. Do you seriously think the delegates didn't know all of the strengths and weaknesses of all the bids???!!

Qatar? That’s a red herring. If we’d won 2018 we wouldn’t have a given a toss about 2022. Now that we haven’t, hey look at those darn Qatarians? Do they even have a football team*, by jingo(ism)? We’re not chucking out toys out of the pram by the way: these tears are for football not because we are very sore losers.

Of course, no mention is made of Qatar’s forthcoming hosting of the 2011 Asian Cup because that doesn’t fit with the theory. Instead, we are treated to people telling us the impossible temperatures in July. It was 45 degrees yesterday. It is now over 50. A quick Google search reveals that historical maximum daily temperature in Qatar in July seems to sit somewhere between 40 and 43 degrees. We’d better call Greenpeace – global warming is worse than we thought. On a practical note, perhaps the Qatar team can see if anyone in Melbourne remembers how they prevented the athletes at the 1956 Olympics from bursting into flames. (Or possibly just not play games during the hottest part of the day? Radical, I know.)

I wonder when the campaign will begin to demonstrate our commitment to fair play by taking our ball home and withdrawing from the competitions. We should change our national sport to knuckle-dragging and be done with it.

* Yes they do and have entered more World Cups than England had in ’66.

Lads, no matter what you think us Scots think about the English, the truth is FIFA despise them/you. I and many more 'sweaty socks' were rooting for you to get it but their must be some incredible bitterness toward England.

I have heard it mentioned that FIFA don't like the fact that the The English FA call themelves "The FA" and the fact that Sepp Bladder mentioned the beautiful game originated in China told me they were trying to dilute the whole idea that it came from England.

If the FA and other football associations are so pi$$ed off with FIFA, and want fundamental reform of the organisation, then they should just resign from it and not enter their teams into future competitions.

So if England, Spain and Portugal are still so upset, that is the way forward for them. As 3 major players in the international game, that would then force FIFA to take some action.

I caught a glimpse of a banner headline in the Times yesterday that said 'Don't get mad, get even' so that is the best approach. For example, I've heard that the FA have now called off the meaningless friendly against Thailand in Bangkok next year, and are also considering to drastically reduce the amount of money they hand over as part of some stupid FIFA initiative to develop the game in other countries (I wonder how much actually reaches those countries?!!!)

So the upshot is stop bleating, take it on the chin and then get even through other ways!

Totally agree PieMan, as much as it it would pain me to miss it, I think we should qualify for the next world cup and then pull out. That would send a clear message.

I know it's biting your nose off to spite your face, but I think unless somebody does something drastic, then these farcical decisions by FIFA will just continue.

I dont get the spreading the game thing.....

The best world cups have been in Europe and South America. The one's held in recent time (USA, Japan, and SA) were a bit of a let down for me. Surely if FIFA wanted to make the world cup the spectical (sp) it should be then England or Spain and Portugal should have got it. I cant imagine all the stadiums being sold out in Russia or Qatar, or the atmosphere being what it should be.

I used to live for my footy, but i cant remember the last time I sat through a hole game. The game needs the world cup to spark passion among the supporters again, and i'm afraid that wont happen in Russia or Qatar.

SA world cup was pretty dire, but that was down to the quality of the football not the staging. The US one was made by the performance of Ireland and SK/Japan by the performance of the Koreans beating teams they weren't supposed to.

The prospect of a WC in Russia doesn't fill me with any excitement - I shall probably do something sensible like play golf. But we were never going to win - there's been a hate/hate campaign between Blatter/The FA/British media ever since he was elected? (how did he get in?), 'we' accuse the FIFA officials of being corrupt (ok some of them may be) and expect them to thank us? Naive doesn't come into it!

and I really don't care that Qatar got it in 2022. by then they won't be playing the same game anyway

I'm surprised we don't just start our own and make it every 2 years.... all the income comes to this country every time - simples!

Why even put that much effort in?
Just rename the premier league, of the FA Cup to the World Cup.

A similar alternative seems to be ok for the NFL, NHL, NBA and MLB, so I don't see the problem!

I'd like to see our lads play international teams in something more than just friendlies! I don't mind watching the Euro's but would like to see Brazil, Argentina etc involved... playing Brazil when both teams make 7 substitutions just isn't the same.

Seems a simple concept for the FA to make a nice big trophy and invite the worlds teams to come and play for it :D
