Off to my local garage tomorrow with my car.
Coming home this afternoon the engine management symbol lit up,a "check emissions message appeared and the car felt sluggish.
Any ideas to prepare me for the worst?

Never heard of this valve but checking on google now have an idea of its purpose.
I forgot to say my car is petrol engined, could this valve still be at fault?
Cheers

Think EGR'S are only on diesel engines but I may be wrong. I'm sure a guru will look in soon.

Way too many things that could put ur EML on mate , is the car running ok ? is it ticking over ok
Could be a plug lead/ign coil problem
Lose or burst vacuum pipe
Was it low on petrol, could have got dirty or a misfire etc EML will stay on until cancelled

Way too many options to have a guess at tho

EGR valves are fitted to some petrol engines. So could be a candidate (if fitted) so could lamda sensors, MAF sensor, airintake valve, air temp sensor...

Best to get it code read to see which one it is. best case scenario is that its thrown a fault and gone in to limp mode, the fault has rectified but just now needs the code cleared to take it out of limp.
Thats being an optimist though.

Thanks all for the input, even the arson suggestion!!
At least tomorrow I will have some idea of what I am talking about.

It was a tongue in cheek comment mate.
Seriously tho my mrs had a Megane & had nothing but trouble with it.
Electrics wise it was shocking.

Petrol or Diesel? Could be anything, lambda sensor(s), cat, DPF (if diesel), EGR valves as mentioned.

No real way to tell without getting it diagnosed properly.

But being Renault it could just be a random electrical issue. My emissions light on my Clio 182 sometimes flashes when I'm stuck in stationary traffic and the diagnosis is 'take it out to a quiet road and give it a good thrashing' :D

Just a quick update for all of you interested enough to offer suggestions
Just back from my friendly mechanic with a sweet running car.
Had 2 new coils fitted on 1 and 2 cyls.
£80 cash.
Feel quite relieved !
