200 Self isolating Brits flee ski resort

Those breaking the rules are a minority, a minority will break all rules of some sort or another.

None of us can say they‘ve never broken a rule ever.

Covid-19, as long as you can look at those you love and say you’ve never put them or anyone else at risk from your own behaviour, then you can do no more, idiots will be idiots regardless.
That minority....is a pretty big minority. It isn't just a few people here and there. I tend to think it is creeping more towards a majority.....

In a Country of over 50 million you think 25 million are breaking the rules? No, not for me.(y)

Tash, from a husband/Dad/etc point of view I would of done exactly the same as you, however, we’d of both broke the law.

I knew of a few families in Germany who would go to Austria or Switzerland or Italy every Christmas/New Year for the skiing etc, if those sorts were in Switzerland and negative for Covid had driven home to Germany, they could of easily done the journey without coming in to contact with anyone.

Both theirs and your scenario, what if though? What if you’d broken down or had an accident etc.

I don’t understand anyone going on holiday at the moment and if the 200 broke Swiss laws then if identified they, imo, should be punished somehow.

I just find it very surprising on here at times how quick people are to judge others without knowing all the facts, especially from a media that 99% of us have very little faith in.(y)

Its a tough call re how to get to a test centre. The only folk we have had contact with over the last week is parents at a distance. Lads at golf, at a distance. Then son who lives with us and daughters family. Bottom line is who could I ask to take us.
I remember back in April when a Bessie pal ended up in hospital with Covid. 111 told his wife to call a taxi she asked 111 “if you as a taxi driver would take someone to hospital”. The ambulance was there within 5 mins.
Back in March me and Missis T were sat around the pool in Mexico, we kind of came to the notion that even though the UK was in lockdown, there was no way they were gonna let a copper and a truck driver who delivers food be sat at home furloughed. And that we would be having the grandkids nigh on most days. EG, Was 18 days and nights in January and 17 in Feb. With ironically December being the quietist month of the year. We have always felt the Covid reapers hand could always be on our shoulder. Sons trips last week to Three tier 4 areas meant he won a rammel Covid raffle. The knock on effects of which is 2 coppers isolating for 10 days. 1 lorry driver off for 10 days. And the golf course missing my cultured language for 10 days.
Stay safe me man.

There has been almost universal condemnation on here of these "escaping" British skiers.
I certainly don't condone what they've done, but try and put yourselves in their position for a moment...

Swiss government in early/mid December: "Our ski areas are still open, you are welcome".
Keen British skier: "Great, I can go and have a ski holiday".
Then, after British skier has arrived in Switzerland on the promise of a skiing holiday...
Swiss government: "Sorry, because you arrived after 14th Dec, you now have to isolate in your pokey hotel room for 10 days, and you won't be able to go skiing".
British skier: "WTF???!!! - you INVITED me over here!!".

I have to admit that I can sort of understand why they were so incensed and did what they did.

Always useful to use “The Dominic Cummings” defence, stay safe pal.

Not really invited over, they still went over there knowing the risk that rules may change. Take your medicine in my view

I tend to agree, not least because of the nature of the holiday itself.

Let’s be honest, it’s no great surprise the European outbreak was fuelled last winter in ski resorts. I’ve been a skier for thirty years and ski holidays simply do not lend themselves to social distancing.

Okay, you’re fine when you’re on the slopes, but given the lift queues, gondolas and so on, the trips must be a breeding ground for viruses. And the evenings don’t help, as these clearly aren’t the sort of trips where you can spend an evening in blissful isolation by the pool and BBQ.

It’s no coincidence that so many resorts are closed until the new year at the earliest, as opening them up for business is quite clearly a huge risk. Anyone travelling to a mountain ski resort, most of which are bubbles in their own right, surely goes knowing they are playing Russian Roulette with their health this season.

Tier 4 here, golf club has reverted to 2 balls.
We have members in Tier 3 areas. They have been told they will be disciplined if caught at the club!
Disciplined by who ? Surely all club could do is report them to authorities , no ?
If club refuses nembers use of facilities surely they will get discount or refund ??

Im not saying they should travel im just saying in my opinion the club are acting outside their remit in this . Golf clubs cannot tell people to not travel anywhere surely ?

Why not, restaurants and cafes can be fined for allowing inappropriate mixing.

They could suspend membership or even withdraw it completely
And report them.
If people break the travel rules and the club is aware and does nothing then the club could be in trouble, could be fined or even shut down.
Its happened to pubs..people have travelled outside their tier, the pub knows this and hasn't thrown them out - pub gets a fine or closure notice.
The lackadaisical attitude so many of the Great British Public have to this thing is why we're in the mess we're in...quite frankly it's scary.
All I can see is total lockdown by mid January if everybody starts taking it seriously.

I'd like it see it earlier than mid-January and last until the end of February. Everything locked down as per lockdown 1.0 across the country so no confusion on what you can and can't do where and when.
