What do you use for long par 3's?

My longest iron is a 5 which is generally short unless i get a lucky bounce and roll to the front of the green. I have a 3 hybrid and driver which are too long. Is this the sort of whole you would use a 3/5 wood, or would you lay it up?

Very subjective i know, just interested to see what people use.

Or if the 3 hybrid is too long either grip down the shaft a bit or get a 4 hybrid.
We have one of these but slightly downhill. If there's no wind then my 4 iron works, into the wind it's the 3h, downwind its a 5 or 6 iron.

A lot depends on the layout of the hole and general course/weather conditions, but on yardage alone I'd be thinking 5 wood.
If I got to the hole and it was all downhill with no trouble in front of it, or all carry across a ravine, I might thing differently and either go with a hybrid or a 3 wood.

So you have a driver, then 3 hybrid then a 5 iron 6,7, etc?
Your 3 hybrid is too long but your thinking about a 3w or 5w?
I'm thinking get a 4 hybrid if your 3 is too long or choke down on the 3 and take some yardage off it

We have 5 Par3's on our Course, 2 of which play 195/200 yds off Whites in the summer, and of those, the 12th has proved my nemesis for too long to remember with a Card in my hand.
Narrow Green, surrounded by mounds, and which if you miss, leaves you virtually no chance of getting up and down.
I can 'reach' it easily with a 4/3 iron, but for some strange reason, perhaps because its so narrow/tight, I push or pull my long irons here, and stare at an ugly 4 or worse on my card.

So, as I dont like the look of Hybrids, Ive got a 7Wood this year, but as we havent been off Whites as yet, havent had chance to test the theory out !

However, on the practice ground, it gives a lovely flight, very penetrating but high and lands softly, seems a great solution to long Par 3's ?

Oh I know, a 7Wood attracts a lot of derision and smirks, but if it helps me get back down to Single Figures, those smirks will be like water off a Duck's back !

What's more, it only cost me £15 ! (Callaway WarBird 7/Heaven Steel Shaft)

just wonerdering, does anyone ever purposely lay up on long par 3's. we've got 2 that will need 4 or 5 irons. i play off 14 and am not great with this length of club, got shots on both, haven't yet, but am seriously thinking of hitting 8 or 9 iron to miss trouble at front and taking chances of up and down or at worst getting a 4. going with 4 iron will often lead to 4 or more, but occasionally might yield a birdy ?

The trouble with laying up short of a par 3 is that you then have to chip over any bunkers that may be in the way.
Can you not play to the back of the green where there is normally less danger?

I was struggling with the concept of a 3h being too long, so swap to a 3w, which would be about 30 yards longer, minimum? How can that help?

I also find it odd that anyone who can hit a 3h about 230 (if it's long, it must be going through the back) can't reach the green with a 5i. Ten yards difference per club (roughly) gives 3h at 230, 4i at 220, 5i at 210? However, this also means a 170 yard 9i.

James, have you changed your user name?

We have a long par 3 16th 202yds. It is at the high point of the course and very exposed to the wind. Wind is nearly always into you and there is trouble around 80% of the hole including a hedge 5 yds through the back, so going long is not an option. When putting together a decent score a couple of weeks ago I seriously debated laying up as there is a channel between the bunkers at the front of the green. My thinking was if I could put a 7 iron onto the fairway in front I should be able to chip and run my second onto the green and probably walk off with a 4. In the end I took out my 3 wood and tried for the green, pushed it into the woods and ended up with a 7. Next time when the wind is so strong I may well lay up. :o

This isn't an attempt at an idle boast.

When i use a 3 hybrid i hit too long. I generally get a lot of roll. A few people have suggested choking down the grip which i'll try.

The 5 iron just about creeps onto the green. I wouldn't want to chance a bigger iron for fear of where the ball could end up.

So i was wondering if a wood would do it. I don't own a wood so not sure what sort of distance i'd get.

I'm not too knowledgable about all of the hybrids but I would have thought a 3 hybrid goes further than a 3 iron.

Don't they have longer shafts and the hybrid club head shape?
