£700-£1000 Budget...... Is it enough??

When i started i got a starter set from a sports and soccer.
Everything was £99, which was driver,3,5,woods, 3-sw irons, putter, brolly, bag, tee's and balls. Dunlop did me untill i was sure golf was for me.

Or, not sure what the pro shops where you are are like, but in inverness we have 3 and the have some right bargins. you could get a nice set of irons for £150 or less, all sorts of drivers and woods for £70 or less even have sets of woods cheap, and wedges at £20 each.

For what it's worth I agree with all the posts above advocating getting good 2nd hand gear. If you do that (and your budget is ample) you will have a set that was top of the range a few years ago. If you go down the "starter set" or "bargain" new clubs you will have a set that is and always will be poor quality.

I'd estimate a decent driver for around £100-120, irons £200 and a putter maybe £50-70 (paid £65 for mine when it was only a few months old and still the same model as the new ones at £139). Add in a hybrid or 5 wood for £50 and a bag and trolley if you need one and you are looking at about £500-£550 in my book.

I'm selling my callaway big bertha 08 irons 4-sw if you are interested. They are ideal for a beginner. I've only had them since July and I've not played many rounds with them. £150 + p&p if you are interested

My first set was an all in one package set which cost around £200 (all clubs, bag, balls). I contemplated going down the route of second hand clubs but figured I'd go the cheaper route just in case I found I didn't take to golf (after playing nothing but football). They were fine until last summer when I started to find a bit of consistency and did me proud until then but getting a 'proper' driver and a decent set of irons really did help. If you're going to dedicate yourself to the game then I'd agree with those advocating second-hand gear. There are so many bargains out there that I've no doubt you can get yourself a really good set-up for your budget.

Happy shopping! :)

I would recommend decent second hand clubs, look after them , and when you upgrade to something nice and shiney, you will get most of your money back on them.

Well thought of fairway

And that leaves plenty to pick whatever putter and bag takes your fancy.

£700 is plenty to buy good quality new kit if you just look at last year's models.

I started back in November, bought a cheap set of md golf irons graphite 4-sw also inc driver, 3 & 5 wood and a putter and bag (wilson cart bag) for £50

I didnt get on with the irons and picked up a set of Titleist 775CB's 3-pw off here for 80 notes

got a cobra hs9 12 deg driver off ebay for £35

Cobra baffler No5 Hybrid for £35

Yonex No4 Hybrid £29.99

callaway 7 way stand bag for £49

taylormade daytona rossa putter, ex demo for £28 inc headcover

titleist 906f 3 & 5 wood and a nike sv 60 deg, yonex 56 deg and callaway 52 deg wedges for a grand total of £40 the lot

so grand total of £345 for nigh on 2 full sets of clubs, the MD's my son now uses and mine apart from driver will last me for a few years to come

mostly ebay or online sales at golf depot, online golf, clubhouse golf

good luck :)

I think i've done particularly well at buying my gear at bargain prices, it's mostly off ebay but check out my kit (below) all for a grand total of £900 ish and thats with my Motocaddy bag and trolley and FJ shoes too. I should change my name to Del Boy ;)

Just to throw my tuppence worth in, I only took the game up last year and almost everything in my bag is second hand. Even my bag is 2nd hand!

I went round shops trying out different clubs to get an idea of what felt best to me then shopped about places like Gumtree, eBay, pro shops, even asking mates to get my equipment together. I'll run down my bag, all 2nd hand unless stated:

Bag itself is a Slazenger Tour trolley bag and cost £20 off a mate. Im waiting on my new bag to arrive, bought a Titleist RC-10 off here for £60.

Nike Dymo2 SQ driver - £65
Dunlop DDH 3 wood - £6 new
Confidence 18* rescue - 1p new. I was buying a load of stuff off SportsHQ on the day they happened to be offering these at 1p if you spent £35.
Mizuno MX-200 3-PW - £200
Titleist 56* Vokey Oil Can wedge - £55
Odyssey 2- ball White Hot XG putter - £45

My brother has the same 3 wood as me and hits it 220yds arrow straight and has a £6 Dunlop 60* wedge that's like a magic wand most of the time. The more you play the more you realise that a lot of the time it's the singer that's the problem, not the song.

I think I've spent nearly as much on range balls as I have on kit. Bear that in mind for cost too.

Good point tim, it doesn't stop once you've bought the kit!! Range balls, gloves, playing balls etc, pint in bar after its a huge drain on the I'd wallet.

As said before by many I would go down the cheaper second hand quality gear and save as much for lessons as you can.

£700. Plenty.

Don't waste your money on a starter set if you know you're hooked.

I have £100 driver, £75 3-wood, £60 (x2) 5w and hybrid. All new.
£180 irons (2nd hand) £50 putter (ex-demo, shop soiled) £40 vokey (new, but old season)

£565. Leaves plenty for a bag and good manual trolley.
