£500 for the headcover, how much did the putter cost?

I have no issue with those who have a fortune at their disposal spending it as they see fit. But to expect a twelve grand putter to give you a competitive edge is madness (IMO) Were this to be the case then all Pros would be using them.

It strikes me as similar to when considering specifying diamond-studded solid gold bath taps as opposed to bog standard stainless steel ones.

Both fill your bath equally as well and their performance is probably only as good as their washer. Or indeed take wristwatches - Timex v Rolex, both tell the time equally as well.

Most of the pros who play scottys or bettinardi putters or whatever are tour only versions with custom welded necks and specialised patterned milled faces for different feel. These putters regularly sell for a small fortune

Didn't know that although I see so many top Tour Pros using what seem to be fairly standard TM Spiders and Oddesseys and so on. I have heard of folks buying putters in particular that had been owned by X Y or Z and would imagine this lifts he club from a tool of the trade to the status a collectable along with a correspondingly heavily inflated price tag.

There seems to be a clear differential here. Are people buying a putter to play the game with or as a collectable similar to a painting, vase or rare postage stamp?

However I'm really talking about well-heeled amateurs and club players spending small fortunes in persuit of a competitive edge. Not Pros who get all of their clubs F.O.C as part of endorsement deals.

A high percentage of the pros play putters with customisation that wouldn't be available or would be very expensive to your normal club golfer, even odyssey make special inserts etc for tour players. Lots of guys collect putters like art, I dont think anyone is daft enough to think money spent equals more putts going in. People like having things that are exclusive or hard to come by so this pushes the prices of tour only putters up quite consistently.

Your watch anology is crap, completely different.

Ah, well ... fair enough 👍

But can we agree you’re OK with the bath taps then?

Not really, you can buy grohe or Bristan, decent quality, then all the Chinese rubbish.....
The putter is is only as good as the hands it’s in wether it’s 12k or £12.
Only in my humble opinion obviously 😀

Some interesting opinions on SC putters here. I have no qualms about anybody spending what they like on leisure/luxury items (assuming of course they have the means and aren't starving their families to pay for it). Clearly there is a market for SC's especially some of the tour only custom models and the rare versions. However they are not some form of silver bullet in terms of holing more putts and it is still dependant on the skill of the player. I have never liked SC's personally (aside from their grips which on a lot of models I have found felt very cheap and nasty in my hands) and never found one that performed any better than my other models. I have never seen these specialised SC putters as "art" but maybe I am just a golfing heathen in that respect

I've always thought they were overrated. If I had £300+ given to me to buy a new putter I'd be looking at Evnroll instead of a Scotty. I'd rather pay £200 for a stroke lab than £300 for a Scotty
