    Chipping and short game issues

This is one area where those manky range mats can be really helpful. The ones that have literally no material left on them and are like a piece of concrete with a thin carpet on top. You can use those to work on your technique for chipping of tight firm lies. You can still use bounce of these, I...

    Jumbo Max Grips

Defo just do one club and try it out. I am not a great fan of the club manufacturers approach, where certain hand sizes determine the grip you need. I think it is much more down to personal preference and how it feels/works for you. I have larger grips than I should on my Irons and much prefer...

Pro V1 - Worth the money?

For me, yes. I have tried loads of others, and I keep going back to a Pro V. I do like the better Bridgestones and TP5's, also like the Wilson DX2's (nice winter ball).

    Do you trust launch monitors?

As all have said. It largely depends on who is using it and what for. We had a golf sim setup at work when we were sponsoring an event. The longest drive was 360 yds.......it was ridiculous how it had been setup. On the other hand, I go to a club fitter/pro and we always make a comparison...

Methods of Ensuring Supplementary Cards are Registered Before Round - Foolproof?

Buy a little time stamp machine and have a little chit by the box. The player has to time stamp and write name on chit and drop it in the box before they start their round. Then they do the same with the card at the end of the round. You match them up, job done. No card afterwards, you will soon...

Should pitching / sand and 60 degree golf swings be a lot shorter than iron swings ?

I sort of feel that if I am trying to get a wedge "there", it's probably the wrong club. During the winter having to carry a lot, I only take a 3/4 set out with me. That means using a 9 iron where a flat out wedge would be the perfect club, this is great practice for honing that skill.

    Torrey Pines - Uninspiring

Is it me or is Torrey Pines incredibly uninspiring. Apart from being perched on the Pacific coast, I really see little about it that is really "Wow". Maybe the camera shots don't do it justice, but some of the pictures make it look like a huge council recreation ground with the odd tree.

    Thorpeness GC and hotel.

Played it loads and stayed quite a few times. I love the course. It's a proper old school course and in Summer can be really tough, the gorse and ferns swallow balls relentlessly. Errant drivers may find it hard work. The Hotel has gone through a few changes, it did have a bit of a lull about...

Does anyone draw a line on their ball to line up for putting?

Yup, always have a line on my ball. If you haven't tried it you should, it takes seconds to line up the putt (I have a pretty clear idea of the path I want as I walk to the ball so the lining up takes a second or two), I don't take any practice stroke when I am putting so I suspect I am quicker...

    Driver Head Question

My club fitter added a touch of weight to the head of my driver when he set it up. I am guessing any decent fitter could do the same for yourself.

    Teeing up irons

For short irons of the tee, I don't tee the ball up. I much prefer the thought of a lovely fairway lie, just perched on the grass. For longer irons I will tee it up, but then I set the tee height dependent on the shot I want. So a high 5 iron would be teed up quite a bit, a punchy 6 would be...

Wet conditions - changes to clubs carried..?

No 4, 6, 8 or PW in the bag at the mo. Just Driver, 4 wood, 21 Deg. Hybrid, 5, 7, 9, G, 56, 60 and putter. To be honest I should drop the 60 as that is low bounce and almost unusable in soggy conditions. I like the 5 for chip and runs around our temp. greens and low branch escapes. The Hybrid...

    Life membership offer

They have just offered a new tranche of life memberships at my club along with an investment scheme. Principle reason is to reduce the amount of borrowing to complete on course improvements (bunker fefurb and green drainage) Being a members club, we are not at the whim of an individual or...

    Cat Pee!!!

I have two pairs of Ecco's that are like this. The newer ones are not as bad as the older ones. I always spray them will a "trainer tamer" spray after use and clean them well. Seems to be an Ecco "thing". Strangely mu summer eccos don't suffer from this it all. Still pretty poor for what is...

Standing too far away seems better? WHY??

One thing to bear in mind. You are probably not as far away as you think, nor as flat as you think. Feel is so often not real. Personally, I would go and have a Trackman session. That way you can find out where you are hitting the ball on your club face, path, angle of attack etc etc. No...
