• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Your no1 must play course??

Big courses, Open qualifiers and accessable to ALL golfers for me it's St Annes Old Links with a mention also to The Dukes at St Andrews.

Hidden gems, either Dunaverty or Durness.

The Dukes is quite similar to the PGA @ Gleneagles. IMO

Loch Lomond. No Chance of that happening. lol

Archerfield would be nice to play.

I have plenty on my list but at the top is Royal Dornoch. I proposed to my misses on a holiday up in Scotland and on one of the nights we stayed at the Royal Dornoch hotel and walked part of the course, it was a lovely evening and we both enjoyed the views. The misses didn't play golf then, so it was of no interest to her at the time, but now she's been playing for a few years she's keen to go back up there, infact she's offered to take us back there for our 20th anniversary next year....result.

I really want to play all the Open Championship courses, 4 down 5 to go. Playing Muirfield in March next year as part of a pal's 50th birthday trip. Apart from that, just really want to work my way through the top 100 listings, already played more than half of them :whoo:

Surely 14 venues that have held the open (unless you mean what is on the open rota).

I would advise playing St. Mellion (Nicklaus), Formby, Carnoustie and St. Andrews, and one in Marseille (they only have one course, but fantstic).

One I want to play is Pebble beach, or Whistling straits - maybe for a special 50th b/day (but still 9 years off).

For me - it has to be that wee gem West Linton - its a wee peach of a course - and it marks the start of the mixed open season where me and the big man aim to come anything but last! ;)

Yip, nice course with friendly welcome. Just a shame they don't have an individual ladies open...

aye - it is odd they dont have one
anyway - it would have been on a tuesday between 12 and 12.30...

wonder if they used to have one and it just wasnt well attended...

Current one for me is Le Touessrok GC (which I'll get to next weekend at long last) after hearing about it for months from those that have played

interesting responses - more 'tick the box' than must play to enjoy posts isn't surprising.

I understand why St Andrews Old gets mentioned, and whilst I have been there, watched an open, read books etc I have never played it; maybe never will.

Played many on peoples lists over the last 30 years, and most were OK (mixture of overall experience - Wentworth and Lomond, with timlessness - Sundingdale Old and Rosemount (Blairgowrie), which are remarkably similar in a lot of ways) but few had that special appeal.

However, I do want to play a few of the gems, not necessarily hidden but courses to savour. Some are listed here, most are listed somewhere. Scotland seems to have more that it's fair share, but the East Coast of England and Ireland will be getting my attention in due course.

If I was to recommend one to others it would probably be Royal Ashdown, but it's been a few years since I last played there so maybe its changed.

I would love to play the Top 200 in Britain, starting with knocking off England - the rationale being to cover all courses that have been in a Top 100 ranking - have played quite a few including a couple of tricky ones - top of the list in my vicinity is Sunningdale (both) but I don't want to pay £260!

Yay, that's my home course :)

Everyone should play it, though not at the same time and only if you repair your pitchmarks and replace your divots ;)

For me, it's Castle Stuart. I see it's had a bit of a kicking on the 'over-rated' thread but I thought it was fantastic.

LOL... that doesn't really help me! :D

(what did you shoot?)

89 - Most memorable shot was hitting the green on the 15th (driveable Par 4 uphill)

Paid £5 and hit the green on the Par3 3rd to win a free round on the Mongomerie! Even though in bright sunshine it appeared to hit the green, the guy gave me my voucher and when I walked up to the green it had rolled off!
