Your football clubs best ever leader.

Hard to call.

Team captains:-

Graeme Souness as a great player and leader, and has 3 european cups and many leagues in his reign as captain.

Alan Hansen - 2 defeats away from 3 doubles as Captain of arguably Liverpool's best ever team, but due to our European ban, never tested at that level.

Steven Gerrard - every fellow player talks about his leadership qualities, as well as being a great person, but maybe due to inferior playing colleagues hasnt got the trophy list of the others.

For the fans - Joey Jones, a million fist pumps and more whilst wearing the red shirt.

For the club off the pitch, Kenny Dalglish.

For the club as a whole - Bill Shankly - no bigger leader than him.

As a 29 year old Liverpool fan, there's only one answer. Stevie. Never saw anyone else worth putting in the conversation.

But that just about covers the history of the club, what I'd give for what Jurgen is building to be the start of something massive again...

Add 2 decades on and I'm the same. I was a kid when Emlyn Hughes and Tommy Smith were our captains, and of an age when you can't appreciate what they had and compare to the players I have seen regularly.

Another good write up on the BBC site today from Alan Shearer. In essence he says City are the best premier team ever. However the best team ever was the Liverpool side of the 80's I think it was.

Not football, but Rugby League and my home club Widnes.
I've thought about this but I can't choose between Kurt Sorensen and David Hulme.
Both players ran their blood to water in the game, led by example and never left anything out on the pitch.

Excellent choices, Sorenson was the first one that came to mind for me but no arguments with Hulmey.

John Greig and Richard Gough at Ibrox and (of course)Cesar at Parkhead....probably even Willie Miller at Aberdeen during the Fergie years?

You supported Rangers and still support Celtic and Aberdeen? That’s a way to make sure you see success every year!

Thanks for the thought but still a bluenose who doesn't go for all the stupidityof sectarianism and not having the blinkers on about other teams(and that include Hibs)
Dave MacKay a great shout DFT!

A toss up between John McGovern and Psycho Pearce. McGovern had the greater glory, but on balance I'd go with Psycho as being the more inspirational. (Sadly, it's all a very long time ago now ...)

Big Roy Aitken has got to be right up there in the 80s timeframe for Celtic. He was never the most natuatally talented of players but had such commitment and drive that he could single handedly change games through his force of will and get the best out his team mates. He was incredible during the 1987-88 Centenary Season for Celtic. He also captained Scotland on many occasions.

Scott Brown since gaining the Celtic captaincy has matured into a real leader as well which I certainly didn't envisage happening in his first 3 years at the club where he was often a bit of a headless chicken and a liability.

On the other side of the city Davie Weir was a great recent captain for Rangers where he used all his experience gained in his long career and could read the game brilliantly marshalling what was a very strong Rangers backline.

When I came to Newcastle as a student back in the day Roy Aitken had just arrived. They were in the old div 2, second tier, and Aitken was winding down his career. He was a real class act on the pitch and you could seem him organising the team constantly. Without knowing other players in Celtics history I can certainly understand why you would give Aitken a shout (y)
